Staff Technical Writer

San Francisco, CA

Position Overview:

  • Principal author of English language end-user documentation for game console products.

  • Developmental editor for Japanese to English translations of end-user documentation.

Principal Responsibilities:

Author end user documentation, with U.S. and U.K. consumers as the target audience.

Work with a bilingual team (with variable English language skills) to author English content simultaneously with Japanese content.

Define and implement the methodologies necessary for simultaneous authoring of English and Japanese content.

Actively participate in content strategy planning.

Audit product design and UX meetings as needed.

Elicit information from product design engineers and other stakeholders with limited (or no) English language skills.

Edit existing English content (based on source Japanese).

Coordinate with global teams to ensure consistency, readability, and proper tone of voice

Manage content review by stakeholders.

Circulate document files with specific instructions for scope of review.

Aggregate feedback from global stakeholders. Negotiate revisions as needed.

Communicate with partners and stakeholders in Japanese when required.

Plan and Schedule project related tasks.

Negotiate project schedules with partners and stakeholders.

Maintain Project schedule information in the corporate scheduling system

Report project status as needed

Qualifications:

Fluent in English and Japanese, both written and verbal. JLPT certification a plus.

Translation skills with acute attention to detail.

Prior experience creating documentation for consumer electronics and/or the video game industry.

Solid understanding of document design principles (layout, textual information, visual elements). Consumer product documentation planning ability desirable.

Ability to advocate for our end users through tact and diplomacy. Must be culturally sensitive.

Equivalent cross-cultural exposure in a business environment.

Relationship management skills able to elicit meaningful feedback from subject matter experts and tactfully communicate in multicultural environments.

Project management skills ability to manage stakeholder reviews, negotiate and maintain schedules, report project status, prioritize work.

DITA / structured authoring experience highly desirable.

Must be available for occasional travel to Japan.

Must be able to accommodate variable working hours.

Required Experience/Education:

Five+ years tech writing experience, BA/BS degree (Communications / English / Journalism)

Preferred Experience/Education:

Technical degree (UX / Computer Science / Electronics) or equivalent background in addition to the above

Responsibilities: * Create online documentation, tutorials, and sample programs/code for technical audiences (SQL engineers, application developers, etc). * Meet with product managers, software engineers, and UI designers to ensure all features, enhancements, and changes are fully documented. * Work with release engineers and dev ops to deliver weekly product updates and documentation. * Work with support engineers and customer success managers to help drive customer engagement and adoption, including: * Contributing to Knowledge Base articles and Community questions. * Authoring and editing technical blog posts. * Developing training materials, implementation guides, migration guides, best practices, and FAQs. Required Skills/Experience: * 5+ years creating technical product documentation from scratch, as well as from specs. * Expertise in SQL and RDBMS (Oracle, Teradata, Redshift, SQL Server, etc.), including reading and writing sample code. * Experience developing and/or documenting applications using any of the following technologies: * Programming languages/APIs (Python, JavaScript, Java, Go, C#/.NET, etc.). * Big Data analytics, machine learning, and statistics (Spark, R, etc.). * Database drivers/connectors (JDBC, ODBC, etc.). * Experience with all aspects of the documentation development lifecycle, including: * Profiling audiences. * Gathering information, interviewing SMEs, and conducting research. * Authoring, publishing, and managing online/web content. Preferred Qualifications: * Exposure to ETL/ELT and BI technologies. * Exposure to Cloud computing platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP, etc.). * Familiarity with CI/CD methodologies and technologies (Jenkins, Lambda, etc.). * Familiarity with open-source platforms and authoring/publishing tools for a "Docs-as-Code" approach (Git, RST/Sphinx, DITA XML, etc).
