Are you a seasoned technical writer, whos looking to reinvent how people experience documentation? Its not enough for you to transcribe a tech talk - you want to get your hands dirty with the software, load some data, and learn it yourself. You spearhead your own projects (localization or a Knowledge Base), instead of just getting stuck in the release cycle rut. If so, we want to talk to you.

Youll be responsible for overseeing the documentation function and our portal, that means that youll figure out to best way to achieve our objectives, whether that means documentation, videos, tutorials, or something that hasnt been invented yet.

This position is based at our headquarters in Palo Alto, California. Well especially want to talk to you if youve written technical docs for a database, business intelligence, or big data offering.


  • Manage documentation projects involving multiple project teams
  • Solve information challenges with efficient use of time and resources
  • Constantly reimagine how we do things, to optimize for speed, quality, and effectiveness
  • Write original technical content related to databases, Web applications, and business intelligence solutions
  • Evaluate documentation technologies and methodologies, to innovate and make our information solutions world class

Required Skills/


  • 5 - 10 years experience in technical documentation production.
  • Bachelors degree, with a focus in Communications, English, Instructional Design, Information Management, or a related discipline.
  • Proven ability to manage documentation projects and deliver within a software release cycle.
  • Excellent writing skills, with experience writing technical procedures and concept topics for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to create content in varied voices from charming and witty to technical and serious.
  • Creativity and innovation in the audio, visual and written realms.
  • Markdown and Jekyll for documentation
  • Developer tools like GitHub and JIRA
  • Image and video editing tools like Adobe Photoshop and Camtasia
  • Bonus points if you have hands on experience with databases and reporting tools like Power BI, Qlik, Tableau, and Excel

You would be working with the team of writers documenting our Virtual Desktops Infrastructure (VDI) product (VMware Horizon 7) in VMware's End User Computing (EUC) business unit. Your experience with on-premise and SaaS enterprise software will enable you to work productively with other product team members to create and maintain excellent documentation for VMware's customers. You have a passion for new technologies and you doggedly pursue information that helps our customers to succeed. When customers struggle, you listen and make improvements. You love establishing relationships with your peers in engineering and product management (among others) to enhance your knowledge of the product and its customers. You will work as part of a distributed, global team in a dynamic environment. You understand the technical writing process, possess the technical expertise to explain complex technical concepts to an administrator audience, and have superb communication, leadership, and project planning skills. Responsibilities * Define customer requirements for large and complex documentation projects and draft documentation plans and schedules. * Create information for multiple audiences: administrators and end users of the product, each with varying levels of technical expertise. Efficiently implement reuse strategies to produce content appropriate for each type of user. * Work with other IX writers to find opportunities and create strategies for cross-product content reuse and collaborative uthoring. * Collaborate with software developers, product managers, writers, information architects, quality engineers, and technical support engineers to develop and review information. * Use DITA to author high-quality information on schedule. * Incorporate customer feedback and suggested improvements into core content. * Storyboard and script videos on key product technology, concepts, and tasks. Required Skills and Experience * BS/BA in Technical Communication, Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent experience. * 5+ years of experience writing software documentation for a technical audience. * Ability to organize information, learn complex concepts, and explain concepts and tasks clearly and concisely. * Understand structured, task-based writing and able to write in a minimalist style. * Knowledge of technical writing authoring technologies, including XML and DITA. * Basic knowledge of HTML. * Knowledge of video creation and production a plus. * Positive attitude and professional presence to engage with developers and product managers. * Project management skills to effectively track and handle assignments, including the ability to estimate, prioritize, and organize tasks effectively. * Ability to work reciprocally in a global writing team. * Ability and willingness to learn and put to use new skills brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. * Flexibility and interest in working with new technology in a dynamic environment * Confirmed ability to explain complex and potentially unfamiliar architectures and processes clearly and coherently for all audiences, including creating explanatory illustrations when required. * Ability to produce new content or revise existing content quickly.
