Sr. Technical Product Manager

Position Summary

Insulet develops extraordinary diabetes technologies that improve the lives of people with diabetes. To deliver outstanding connected products, Insulet executes product development in a matrixed environment, with resources from many disciplines (e.g. mechanical engineering, embedded electronics, UX and human factors, software engineering, cloud architecture, clinical, regulatory, and commercial) contributing to each program. The Product Manager serves as the product leader for a program that may consists of a wearable, a controller, user apps, integrations with partner technologies, and cloud technologies.

In this role s/he is primarily accountable for the success of the product that is released (user experience, commercial success, field reliability), and has shared responsibility with the Program Manager for timeliness to market and program budget. Working closely with a peer in marketing and program management, s/he achieves these objectives by ensuring that the product vision, system design, and regulatory and clinical strategies, are optimized to efficiently deliver an outstanding product to Insulet's users.


  • Lead a product team to design and develop solutions that compellingly address the needs of people with diabetes

  • Collaborate with Marketing to ensure that the product vision is clear and compelling, and that the planned product will deliver commercial success by delivering meaningful innovation to users

  • Translate product vision into wireframes and design control documentation that a product team can efficiently develop

  • Leverage Product Owners to ensure that the product vision is well-understood by all members of the product team and that each feature delivers its part of a cohesive vision

  • Evangelize the product experience by being a constant user of each product integration and provide feedback to the product team to constantly guide development towards the vision

  • Collaborate on roadmaps for Insulet's product portfolio and the technologies that underpin it

  • Provide leadership and enthusiasm to the program team to help them complete their work successfully

  • Manage product scope and tradeoffs

  • Continually improve processes in the Product Management group

  • With peer in Program Management, ensure product is delivered on time and in-budget

  • Perform other duties as required

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent

  • MBA preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years of software development experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a product manager in an agile environment

Summary: The Technical Product Owner collaborates with the Data Platforms technical leaders, Project Managers, and API customers to lead the development and execution of Dexcom's API products. The Technical Product Owner is responsible for ensuring that the right features are built through gathering and prioritizing requirements with input from internal and external customers. The Technical Product Owner will work closely with the development team to communicate features, priorities, and requirements. This is a high-visibility, hands-on position that requires commitment, ownership, flexibility, careful planning, and attention to details. Functional Description: Functions as a key stakeholder of a project and represents the customer to the development team. Responsible to have a vision of what he or she wishes to build, and convey the vision to the scrum team in order to successfully start an agile software development project. Oversees the product backlog, which is a prioritized features list for the product. Responsible for creating the list of backlog items and prioritizing them based on the overall strategy and business objectives. Responsible for bridging the gap between customer needs and delivery of the tangible product features, by translating customer language into technical details the developers can interpret to initiate development. Prioritizes the product backlog during the sprint planning meeting, selects the amount of work to be done during each sprint, and how many sprints will be required. Works with the development team to answer any questions team members have regarding the customer's view of how they're implementing a product feature. Seen as an expert at understanding and anticipating the client's needs to more effectively manage the development process. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: * Own the API strategy and roadmap definition in collaboration with others on the team, ensuring alignment of company objectives, product vision, and customer feedback. * Responsible for articulating necessary features and functionality as well as the release criteria (product requirements document). * Effectively communicate the API product vision and requirements to the development team. * Engage frequently with the internal and external development teams: facilitate discussions, provide clarification, provide input on requirement acceptance and refinement, testing and validation, contribute to design activities and decisions. * Influence platform architecture as it relates to the API products, synthesizing needs from customer requirements and working with engineering leadership and systems architects to ensure cohesion to platform evolution. * Be the go-to source of knowledge for all API-related product inquiries, including upstream and downstream effects. * Interface with the engineering leadership to identify requirements and convert them into executable stories for software development using the Agile method. * Make trade-off decisions between possible and desirable, which requires a good sense of what is technically feasible. * Review detailed technical requirements and specifications documentation to ensure that the product being built aligns with the product vision. * Ensure all elements of "launch" are understood and planned for, including coordinating launch timelines with downstream customers. * Evaluate competitors and the market for capability-oriented and emerging development and technology trends. * Coordinate go-to-market planning as appropriate for any launches impacting end-customers and partners. * Work with marketing to develop customer-facing materials including documentation, presentations, and marketing materials. Required Qualifications: * Experience with an internet-facing API product management preferred. * Strong data-centric technical knowledge in key API Infrastructure, Identity Management, and other technologies like REST APIs, OAuth2, OpenID, Webhooks, SQL and NoSQL databases, Message queues, Machine Learning, etc. * Exposure to or direct experience working with Internet of Things, time-series data, as well as analytics use-cases involving data heterogeneity. * Demonstrated team player with ability to coordinate multiple projects in a fast paced and deadline driven environment. * Problem solver with the ability to effectively communicate technical solutions. * Passionate about data, data-centric innovation, and with a can-do attitude and ability to influence and motivate others while staying positive. * Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to clients and internal teams. * Comfortable leading meetings and writing documents for senior leadership and stakeholders. * Ability to work effectively in a coordinating role across multiple disciplines, a strong, open and collaborative work style, a customer-service orientation with the ability to translate business goals into technical requirements.
