What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $70,765 - $116,762 annually. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

What You'll Do

The Department of Finance manages the city's investing, fiscal analysis, budgeting, debt, and asset management, tax assessment and collection, and accounting functions as well as establishing, maintaining and enforcing fiscal policies, practices and procedures for the entire City and County of Denver. The Department commits to Denver residents the delivery of these services through a financial structure that mirrors the best practices of both the public and private sectors. This commitment promotes better service, enhanced performance measures, maximum accountability, and improved business processes.

In this Senior Tax Auditor role, you will specialize in applying generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards in conducting financial and tax compliance audits of entities engaged in business in Denver and provide assistance to the supervisor with work prioritization, assignment, evaluation and quality control over professional audit staff.

Specifically, as a Senior Tax Auditor, you will:

  • Apply audit procedures and methodology, generally accepted auditing standards, generally accepted accounting principles, statutory guidelines, and working paper preparation for compliance and internal control.

  • Apply and participate in the design of various auditing and accounting tests of entities engaged in business in Denver to determine the reliability, integrity, and internal control of financial and operational systems for compliance purposes.

  • Interpret relevant sections of the Denver Revised Municipal Code (DRMC) and/or the Colorado Revised Statutes and use professional judgment in applying them.

  • Examine accounting records of varying complexity levels of complexity which may include general ledgers, financial statements, asset registers, registers, and journals in the revenue, purchasing, and payroll cycles, and legal contracts and other supporting source documents, to verify transactions have been properly recorded and are in compliance with DRMC and/or Colorado Revised Statutes

  • Review audit findings and conclusions with business owner or business representative, which may include Certified Public Accountants, attorneys, chief financial officers, or controllers. Respond to questions and suggest appropriate procedures for corrective action. Educate business owner or business representatives on ordinance or statutory requirements to improve compliance.

  • Prepare audit reports with recommendations for corrective action, including collecting deficiencies or issuing refunds.

  • Apply professional judgment in identifying and quantifying tax compliance shortfall situations and recommendations for audit or other corrective action.

  • Conduct research, prepare for and testify in formal hearings and courts of law concerning accounting and auditing techniques, rationale, methodology, and procedures used.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Experience auditing sales and use taxes and knowledge of Colorado Home-Rule jurisdictions

  • Superior customer service skills

  • Skill in interpreting and applying written guidelines, precedents and work practices to standardized work situations or specific cases with some independent judgment

  • Skill in exercising initiative, sound judgment, and decision making in solving problems and meeting organizational objectives

  • Skill in independently adapting, interpreting, and applying written guidelines, precedents and standardized work practices to a variety of unprecedented or problematic situations

  • Licensed CPA or CFE or is open to pursuing this licensure.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of professional auditing experience.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
