    What You Need for this Position

  • 5+ years of high-level tax preparation experience

  • Experience with tax preparation and research software (preferably Lacerte Tax)

  • Practical knowledge of paperless office procedures, including Adobe Acrobat markups

  • Knowledge of corporate, LLC, and Trust/Estate tax regulations at both the Federal and State levels.

  • Competency with high-net worth individual tax planning and consulting

  • Familiarity with accounting software, such as Quickbooks, Sage and/or Accounting CS

  • Comfortable working directly with clients on complex tax and accounting issues

  • Analysis, on an advanced level, tax data and review workpapers and tax returns

  • To apply critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate client provided tax data to determine proper reporting of activities.

  • To research and document tax issues identified during client assignments

  • Strong analytical skills, with attention to detail and multi-tasking capabilities

  • Demonstrate excellent team skills, positive attitude and high ethical standards

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines

Principal is looking for a Director of Mutual Fund Tax Accounting to join the Mutual Fund Accounting team. This team is a part of a broader community of over 400 accountants who work throughout the company. In this role you'll not only work within your team, but you'll work with accountants and other business partners across the organization. Responsibilities * Direct all aspects of the 1940 Act Funds (Funds) tax matters * Coordination and oversight of the 3rd party tax service provider utilized by the Funds * Act as primary tax liaison with outside tax advisors, consultants, auditors, and fund administrators * Keep current on emerging tax issues that impact the Funds, actively participate in the industry * Coordinate with internal departments to ensure that the tax issues, policies and guidelines are understood and implemented correctly * Develop a strong working relationship with portfolio management teams and pro-actively provide the teams with the necessary reporting to assist in the dividend / excise tax management of the Funds * Ensure the appropriate level of documentation is created and maintained to support analyses performed, decisions made and conclusions reached * Prepare/review tax disclosure for insertion in financial statements * Assist in monitoring book/tax differences such as PFICS, wash sales, straddles, contingent debt, equity/debt determination, REITS, MLPs etc. * Perform tax research, advice and analysis for current and potential products including keeping appraised of developments and industry issues; draft tax position memos as needed * Perform ASC 740 analysis * Review and maintain monthly and quarterly tax compliance, IRC diversification, income tests, etc. * Enhance/develop internal tax policies/procedures and automation solutions * Prepare tax related communications for the Board of Directors * Assist in the training and development of staff on tax matters Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent required * Minimum 12 years of related experience with significant time spent in mutual fund accounting * '40Act/mutual fund/regulated investment company tax required * Experience with complex tax adjustments such as those for derivatives, partnerships, and foreign blocker entities required * Experience determining taxable income and distribution amounts required * Experience establishing and maintaining an internal control environment required Location We have a preference towards candidates who are willing to be located in Des Moines, IA or Folsom, CA.
