GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is a senior-level subject matter expert responsible for overall network security and infrastructure. Planning, installation and supporting firewalls, web applications firewalls (WAF), security and event information management, servers. The duties assigned will include the following: Manage overall network security, install and troubleshoot local area networks (LANS). Knowledge of servers in client-base in all aspects of PC's, networking client software and operating systems. Working knowledge of the planning and implementing of Information Security best practices. Maintain and support server development. QA/testing and production environment. Overnight travel to statewide district offices as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Research and maintain overall network security, including troubleshooting network connectivity, researching security events, and permit approved traffic while blocking malicious and unapproved network traffic. Researching current vulnerabilities and working to mitigate the threats posed to the network.

  • Installs and upgrades local and wide area network system components including firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, vulnerability scanners, application layer firewalls, web filtering, servers and server operating systems and switches.

  • Installs and maintains our Virtual Private network for all remote users and connections.

  • Performs monitoring of and preventive maintenance on enterprise network systems including firewalls, switches, servers, directory service, backups and virus protection to ensure optimum performance and uptime. Takes corrective action and advises agency personnel when problems are indicated.

  • Provides emergency response to system outages such as failed firewall, switches or servers, investigating and isolating the problems and quickly developing solutions to restore network services and minimize user down-time.

  • To keep the agency current with the latest technology and security requirements, evaluates new or replacement products for standard usage. Researches products (software and/or hardware) from many vendors, chooses the best of these for further testing in a laboratory environment. Compares functionality, pricing, quality or technical support, ease of use and interoperability with existing systems to select the best solution of the WGF.

  • Conducts personal training of our IT professionals on new procedures, network applications or management tools.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to those with experience in enterprise virtualization management.

Preference may be given to those with experience in storage systems.

Preference may be given to those with experience in virtualization backup technology and infrastructure.

Preference may be given to those with experience in Active Directory and DNS functions and how they are administered.

Preference may be given to those with experience in basic networking concepts, including layer 2 and layer 3 functions and the ability to troubleshoot issues impacting the virtual environment.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Skills in complex systems analysis, problem identification and solution design skills in interpersonal communications written and oral.

  • Advanced knowledge of network and application security, network operating systems, directory services & utilities in use at the State.

  • Knowledge of hardware (firewalls, load balancers client PC. PC peripherals, servers and other network components.

  • Advanced knowledge of principles, practices and techniques used in the securing, installing, maintaining & troubleshooting of information systems.

  • Ability to work independently and stay on task.

  • Ability to learn new technical concepts quickly and apply them to current work.

  • Ability to communicate technical information to technical and one-technical persons.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Computer Technology)

Experience:

1-2 years of progressive work experience in Systems and Infrastructure with acquired knowledge at the level of a CT Systems & Infrastructure Analyst

OR

Education & ExperienceSubstitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience in Systems and Infrastructure with acquired knowledge at the level of a CT Systems & Infrastructure Analyst

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Some travel required

  • Some evening and weekend work required

  • On-Call shifts required

  • Must be able to list 50 lbs.
