Senior Systems Engineer
Norfolk, Virginia - Direct Hire

Job Description:
The senior network engineer, under general supervision, oversees the purchase, installation, and support of network communications, including LAN/WAN systems. Works on complex problems where analysis of situation requires in-depth evaluation of various factors. Provides work leadership training to lower level network engineers. Provides project management leadership for technical network design and installations. Requires expert knowledge of LAN/WAN systems, networks, and applications. CCNP certification a big plus.

Bachelors Level Degree Experience in lieu of education: Yes
Required: Related 7 years
Five to seven years of experience that includes network design, operation support, hands-on implementation, and configuration of routers, switches, firewalls, and other network equipment.
Appropriate proficiency/certification/training in applicable discipline, as appropriate (ie. CCNP, CCDE)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description) The IT Senior Systems Engineer designs and implements computer systems on the NASSCO network according to established department and company policies, procedures and work instructions. He/she works closely with all other members of the IT Department to provide available, stable, and secure computer systems. This position requires a professional work ethic within general guidelines, originality and interpretation, referring to management for situations which arise outside of standard procedures and is somewhat challenging and varied in nature. Errors in work or actions should be contained within working unit or project. II. POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Experience) * Typically has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field plus 6 years of relevant experience; Associates degree in Computer Science or other technical field plus 8 years of relevant experience or equivalent experience; or 10 years of relevant experience. * Microsoft or other certifications a plus. * At least 4 years experience with supporting MS Windows environment. * Critical thinking and problem solving skills. * Excellent communication skills. * Self-Motivated and able to work without supervision. * Ability to multi-task in a busy and changing work environment. * Experience with Sarbanes-Oxley a plus. III. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS X Carrying X Lifting X Walking X Climbing Pulling Must be able to go on vessels X Crawling X Sitting X Visual Requirements: Crouching Standing Hearing Stooping Other: Kneeling X Talking Vision Requirements: The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating equipment where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by technicians, service people, etc. IV. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Reports to the Network Manager. Interfaces with other IT groups (e.g. software, network, Help Desk, etc.) to specify appropriate solutions. Interfaces with other General Dynamics and NASSCO personnel to develop and/or enforce company-wide or enterprise-wide requirements. V. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES * Responsible for the specification, procurement, installation, configuration and maintenance of computer servers for all operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Server and Linux (Red Hat Enterprise). * Responsible for the design, administration and maintenance of email, VMWare, Citrix, anti-virus and other system software. * Performs or directs regular system monitoring to ensure that the computer systems are available and secure. * Interfaces with Security Analyst to design and implement system security and data assurance. * Designs and implements backup systems to protect the company's systems and data. Proposes and executes appropriate disaster recovery preparedness drills/simulations. * Ensures all operating systems and software are patched to current versions according to company policy. * Designs Active Directory structure that is maintained by the Help Desk and Systems Engineers that support security directives and auditing requirements. * Designs, specifies and supports telephony and video teleconferencing systems. * Documents current and proposed systems using flowcharts, diagrams, and other tools and ensure documents are kept current. * Troubleshoots and resolves server and computer systems problems. * Participates in teams to discover IT business requirements and specify appropriate solutions. * Stays abreast of tools that would improve the effectiveness of the Infrastructure Team. * Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. VI. ACCOUNTABILITY Responsible for designing and maintaining the integrity and security of all computer systems according to established company policy and procedures and with the input of Security Analysts. Must follow documented change control procedures for audit purposes. Responsible for ensuring backups of systems are present and tested for disaster recovery and business continuity preparedness. Responsible for continuous improvement of processes and procedures to increase security and reliability with a goal to reduce the labor required to monitor and enforce those processes and procedures. VII. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Must be willing to work additional hours or nights and weekends as necessary to ensure that systems are operational at all core hours with minimal impact on end computer system users.
