Job Summary:

We are currently seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join the Seapower and Sensor Systems teamin San Diego, CA.

The Seapower and Sensor Systems team is responsible for all aspects of the programs life cycle from development to sell-off and deployment of systems. SSS engineers are responsible for the integration and selloff of system requirements to internal and external customers.

The Senior Systems Engineer will be an integral part of this elite team as a development, integration and test engineer. The Senior Systems Engineer will provide Subject Matter Expertise support of radar integration onboard Zumwalt Class DDG. The SPY-3 radar is a high performance, complex shipboard X-band AESA radar system for the US Navy.

In support of radar integration and testing, the Senior Systems Engineer will maintain the software baseline of the radar, support testing events and verify new radar functionality; test and verify software modifications; identify and resolve system performance issues; and support higher level radar integration with the combat systems and other external interfaces.

The Senior Systems Engineer also collects and analyzes data via test equipment and radar system equipment, and supports formal test events. The role also involves working with other SMEs (e.g. Radar, Systems, Receiver/Exciter, Power, etc.) under the direction of the group lead, coordinating with senior software SMEs in Massachusetts and other Combat System SMEs.

This position can be a salary grade G08 or G09 based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.

The ability to obtain a SECRET Security Clearance is required.

Required Skills:

  • 4+ years of experience with Naval Combat Systems on any of the in-service configurations.

  • Software development within the DoD/Military environment

  • Radar, Command & Control or Mobile sensors (i.e. JLENS, DBR, Zumwalt, Aegis)

  • Technical software; DoD integration and/or test programs

  • C, C++, Java

  • Cisco, IBM BladeCenter, and/or Linux

  • Phased Array Radar/Signal Processor testing procedures and the ability to analyze test results and report findings

  • Ability to perform normal climbing and lifting associated with shipboard electronic work and support embarkation on U.S. Navy ship

Required Education:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering, or related STEM field.

Desired skills:

  • Zumwalt class Mission System Equipment concept of operations

  • Proven ability to schedule multiple complex integration events involving both hardware and software

  • An understanding of US Navy preventive and corrective maintenance procedures and proficiency in reading technical documents

  • Experience with large scale Ship Integration and Test practices Familiarity with applicable documentation:

  • Computer Program Requirements Specifications (CPRS), Interface Design Specification (IDS), Computer Program Description Documents (CPDD), Combat System Technical Operations Manual (CSTOM), Combat Systems Operational Sequencing System (CSOSS), Quick Reference Guide (QRG) Data Analysis and Automated Testing techniques Experienced with operation and maintenance of Phased Array Radar hardware/software.

The Seapower and Sensors Systems Department (SSS) provides expertise in the integration, validation, and sell off for various defense programs within IDS. SSS Engineers are involved in all aspects of the Integrated Product Development System (IPDS) cycle. SSS engineers have ownership authority to ensure that individual items are integrated and perform as expected as well as ensuring that the system can be sold off. In San Diego, some of the programs SSS supports are the Ship Self Defense System (SSDS), GPS-based Position, Navigation and Timing Service (GPNTS), Landing Platform Dock (LPD) programs and Zumwalt Total Ship Activation. The Senior Systems Engineer will be an integral part of this elite, highly-visible team as the lead for the Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) team. The TSCE team supports the integration, installation, operation and maintenance of the software and network systems installed on the DDG-1000 Class Destroyers. Will provide the direction and oversee the TSCE team activities as well as provide support to the various Mission Areas executing the Total Ship Activation program. Responsibilities include: * Lead daily operation, maintenance and maturation of the shipboard software and network systems * Provide day-to-day oversight and direction to the TSCE waterfront team * Facilitate cross-team communication as well as daily interaction with other contractors, ship's crew and Government representatives * Lead installation of software including official builds and approved overlays * Assist with the development/updating of Plans of Action & Milestones and the TSA schedule * Lead grooming of software in support of cross-team testing for component, functional, operational and demonstration shipboard tests * Lead the investigation, resolution and verification for WSTRs found on the ship * Collaborate with software developers and lab sites to help resolve issues; establish relationships to facilitate knowledge sharing * Assist with the creation, modification and updating of reports for the customer * Travel to Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, etc. to support program requirements as needed Required Experience/Skills: * Six (8) years of experience working in a software development environment, in a software-centric operating and maintenance environment, in executing System Integration efforts, and/or in system test and verification/validation * Three (3) years leading a team, project or activity * Experience with ship processes, waterfront operations and ship activation * Experience with DDG-1000 class equipment and concept of operation or equivalent complex US Naval combat system * Excellent leadership, teaming, organization skills * Excellent written and verbal communication skills A current SECRET Security Clearance and the ability to obtain a TOP SECRET Security Clearance is required.
