Maxar is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer, located in Palo Alto, CA, to participate in general front-end systems engineering activities in support of current programs and proposals. You will apply systems engineering rigor and discipline to complex programs, converting customer needs into an appropriate design through requirements decomposition and flow down. As the program progresses, your focus will transition to integration, verification and validation activities. Since most of our programs involve multiple engineering disciplines, the expectation is that you are familiar with most of them, but bring some expertise in at least one area.


  • Concept of operations development and validation

  • Develop, decompose, and flow requirements at the mission, system, sub-system, and component levels

  • Manage requirements development and maintenance

  • Develop full system validation and verification plan

  • Ability to define and conceptualize interface & interoperability requirements

  • Generate and maintain compliance matrix for system and sub-systems

  • Connect and work with sub-systems engineers to ensure compliance

  • Support proposals and help explore new business opportunities that capitalize on Maxar - Space Infrastructure's strengths

  • Oversee spacecraft testing and review test results

  • Customer discussions regarding system design and design decisions

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Requires 5-7 years of relevant experience

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, MATE, Physics or related field.

  • General understanding of spacecraft design and product life cycle

  • Familiarity or experience with the systems engineering rigor or discipline

  • Experience with any requirements management systems (i.e. DOORS, JAMA, etc.)

  • Experience following a systems engineering process on an electro-mechanical system

  • Ability to manage ambiguity and "gray space"

  • Experience in working trade spaces to come up with acceptable solutions

  • Ability to provide technical articulation

  • Good communication and presentation skills

  • Intermediate working knowledge of MS-Office including Visio

  • Ability to bring decisions to closure, particularly those involving multiple disciplines and teams

  • Key Employee Competences: Action Oriented, Instills Trust, good Decision Quality, and Interpersonal Savvy

Desired Skills:

  • Experience coding in C, C++, Python, or Matlab a plus

  • Experience in building macros in Excel using VBA

  • Experience developing technical processes, and tailoring processes for unique programs

  • Familiarity with technology trade studies

  • Experience selecting processor units and designing FPGAs

  • Optics integration experience a plus

  • Familiarity with risk management

  • INCOSE certification is a plus

Responsibilities * Collaboratively creates and drives system architecture for residential storage and solar products * Provides leadership in strategy, design, simulation and validation by closely working with applications, battery, power electronics, hardware, solar and validation engineering teams * Responsible to balance efficiency, power, and generation capabilities against costs for our current products and future product roadmap * Develops system requirements, distributes function and performance to components within systems, defines system hardware and software architecture, defines electrical and communication interfaces for components to meet those goals * Defines system level functional and safety behavior * Develops system level FMEAs and any risk analysis as appropriate * Owns system level requirements definition Essential Skills * Engineering experience with grid-connected power electronics for solar, wind, or other renewable power generation, or grid-connected batteries * Experience in system-level design tools, including functional specification systems like Polarion or DOORS, fault tree analysis, and failure mode and effect analysis * Fluency in the use of analytical simulation and CAE tools across the engineering spectrum such as Matlab * Experience in high power, high voltage electronics design using a wide variety of topologies to optimize for efficiency, volume, cost, thermal, and controls goals * Ability to generate and interpret simulation results and integrate recommendations into product designs Requirements * BS, MS or PhD in electrical, physics or mechanical engineering * Strong fundamentals in power electronics, battery and solar technology * Solid engineering fundamentals – electrical, mechanical and thermal * Experience in residential or industrial solar systems * Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), IEC, or general electrical code guidelines for solar PV and energy storage systems Tesla Motors Palo Alto CA
