Job Description

The Senior systems Engineer is an all-rounder supporting all components of enterprise infrastructure including Microsoft servers/Active Directory, Storage solutions, AWS Technologies and VMWare VSphere Virtualization. Core expertise in three or more of the above mentioned technologies is essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support and maintain Active Directory infrastructure including identity management, Group Policy updates, Software updates, FSMO roles, DNS, DHCP, Sites and services etc.

  • Support storage infrastructure

  • SAN/NAS, backup and recovery.
  • Support and maintain 3200+ email users currently on a hybrid Office 365 & Exchange 2013 environment.

  • Lead cloud migration initiatives.

  • Lead activities such as system builds, application installation, configuration and monitoring.

  • Support Windows/Unix Server systems as both Physical and Virtual Machines

  • Respond to escalation calls from the Help desk, Desktop support, and other teams to resolve issues and perform maintenance.

  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or relevant major along with:

  • Understanding of networking terminologies and functions (routing, switching, firewall)

  • Extensive experience with VMware technologies including NSX.

  • Extensive experience with AWS cloud technologies

  • EC2/ECS/Route53/VPC/IAM/SES
  • Solid understanding of Exchange and other messaging technologies

  • Experience with supporting Outlook, OWA, activesync.

  • Great knowledge on email Security

  • WhiteListing/Blacklisting, Local Spam issues, eDiscovery, Email Management, Mailbox exports for litigation purposes
  • Experience with storage infrastructure
  • SAN Fibre channel(Hardware, Switches and zoning) and iSCSI ; NAS (NFS/CIFS/SMB)
  • Experience with Dell Compellent and Dell NAS a huge plus

  • Strong technical and trouble-shooting skills required

JOB OVERVIEW Job Description Summary: The Division of Information Technology (it.gwu.edu) is the chief provider of technology infrastructure, services and applications at GW. The Division partners with stakeholders across GW to equip students, staff and faculty with the technology know-how and tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Systems Engineering Services, the Sr. Systems Administrator works within the Division's Systems Engineering Services department within the Division of Information Technology (DIT). The incumbent is responsible for effective decision making on provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, software and infrastructure, both for DIT managed infrastructure and third-party infrastructure platforms (AWS, Azure, VMware etc.). Accountable for the operating systems and services that support the University enterprise application platform environment; Responsibilities include system administration, platform engineering, provisioning, operations and support, which includes documentation of developed standards and procedures, maintenance, research and development to ensure continual innovation. The incumbent will also provide training to relevant University personnel regarding the use of equipment, diagnosing problems, repairs, maintenance, and installation of service software and components. The position is based at GW's Virginia Science & Technology campus in Ashburn, VA but may require travel to the Foggy Bottom campus located in Washington, DC. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
