The candidate will perform in the role of a Senior Syndromic Surveillance data analyst and will be required to monitor daily analytic output of the syndromic surveillance systems hosted in the BioSense Platform environment using the ESSENCE interface and other analytic tools to identify and characterize potential public health events of interest.
The candidate will collect, abstract, code, analyze, or interpret data and provide customized reports, as requested, based on requirements from CDC. Customized reports may be created using the R programming language, R Shiny, SAS and Microsoft SQL (SSRS, SQL) depending upon the business need and requirements. The ideal candidate requires high level working knowledge of SQL, R, and SAS (at least 5 years of on-the-job experience) and experience generating reports in a variety of formats; general knowledge public health threats, and techniques to monitor, summarize, and prepare situation awareness reports (at least two years on-the-job experience), experience at a state or local health department performing surveillance and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The candidate will be tasked to support enhanced surveillance during times of public health events, emergencies and performing routine public health surveillance and reporting. Enhanced surveillance activities may require interactions with other CDC programs and NSSP site partners. Reports may be required as frequently as daily to support CDC Emergency Operations Center information requirements. Performance may be requested on weekends or federal holidays in support of public health emergencies.
Work Location: Syndromic Surveillance Support is to be conducted on site at the CDC (Century Center 2500) in conjunction with the Data Analysis Team and other NSSP staff. Some telework/remote work location may be accommodated with the approval of the CDC Technical Monitor.
B.A or M.A or M.S. in Public Health desired, other degrees will be considered
Public Health Surveillance - minimum 3 years
ESSENCE application minimum 3 years
R Language 5 years
SAS 5 years
SQL 5 years. Ideally SQL experience includes SSRS
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently
Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision making capabilities based on use of data
Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations and developing country environments
Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel)
