The practice of a Senior Surgical Physician Assistant shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the surgical physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician. Medical services rendered may include, but are not limited to: obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations; ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting in surgical procedures; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals.

The Senior Surgical Physician Assistant, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease and/or perform any medical and surgical procedures at the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposed, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient and that a qualified practitioner is not immediately available.

The Senior Surgical Physician Assistant shall also be responsible for the training an mentoring of new surgical PA's, liaise between department staff, nursing units, referring physicians, and house staff. The Senior Surgical Physician Assistant shall also be responsible for organizing and conducting educational/training modules for PA's; organizing and coordinating PA schedules for the department as assigned.

In addition to the Core Skills listed here, Surgical PA's will request validation to perform department specific skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtains patient histories and performs physical examinations; ordering and performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating diagnosis, developing and implementing a treatment plan.

  • Prescribes medications for the patient.

  • Communicates effectively with members of the health care team and the patient and involved others.

  • Participates in a team approach to health care, by acting as a liason between members of the primary care team.

  • Performs emergency, lifesaving procedures in the presence of life threatening situations such as: cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhage or similar problems. Technical skills include but are not limited to, providing basic life support and advanced life support.

  • In collaboration with the Attending Physician and other health care providers, coordinates the care of the patient.

  • Performs procedures that may include insertion and removal of: arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, Swann-Ganz catheters, intra aortic balloons, temporary pacemaker wires, renal dialysis catheters, thoracentesis, paracentesis, arthrocentis and lumbar puncture. In addition performs venipuncture and arteriopuncture.

  • Performs bedside procedures including venipuncture, insertion of IV catheter, arterial puncture, insertion of nasogastric tube, urethral catheterization, intradermal injection, IV

  • Assists the Orthopaedic Surgeons in the OR, for both inpatient and ambulatory cases.

  • Performs other duties as necessary.

  • Attend daily teaching conference and attending rounds.

  • Develop training and orientation modules for new Surgical PA's. Mentor new and existing Surgical PA's.

  • Prepare data for departmental studies and/or projects as needed.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures, as assigned.

  • Oversee completion and submission of routine and special reports, as assigned; oversee various research protocols as assigned.

  • Responsible for organizing and conducting training sessions/courses for PAs that enhance clinical proficiency.

  • Calls to discharged patients from Emergency Department

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's Degree with PA specialty.

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program

  • Registered as a PA in the state of NY, NCCPA certified.

  • Minimum 10 years of work experience.

  • Knowledge of routine patient care equipment, routine intra operative Orthopaedic equipment, automated medical information systems.
