General Purpose of the Position:
The purpose of this position is to be part of the Switch Hyperscale Design Engineering Team. The engineering team is responsible for the design, construction support, and standards development for our rapidly expanding data center footprint. The Hyperscale Center Engineering Team at Switch works to design and develop resilient, cost-effective colocation data center buildings on our campuses throughout the United States.

We are looking for Sr. Substation Design Engineer with experience related to utility-level design serving critical facilities. You will supervise the design of High and Medium Voltage facilities in conjunction with the local utilities, engineers, and business partners which serve our data center facilities. You will be expected to ensure our designs comply with our standards while acting as a subject matter expert, leading the development of our substation-related standards and processes.
You will be part of a tight knit team, relied upon to independently finish tasks while providing support for team members. You will be working with other internal teams, external engineering consultants, equipment vendors and manufacturers, utilities, inspectors, and contractors.
This is a remote position, with domestic travel expected to be less than 25%.
This position may require the candidate/employee to undergo additional background checks and drug screenings prior to and during the course of employment in support of customer-specific deployments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Write and present technical papers to customers, leadership, and peers
Act as a leader and solve problems while being willing to learn from others
Independently research new technologies and develop new solutions for data center electrical designs
Manage multiple concurrent projects designed by external consultants
Manage the Switch portfolio of HV/MV substation design projects
Be a leader in the Hyperscale Data Center Design Engineering team, supporting the design and development of utility level infrastructure to support our data center facilities
Author, review and issue HV/MV RFPs for external design consultants
Work with vendors and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment
Ensure designs comply with relevant codes
Manage the portfolio of all HV/MV Substation and associated Grid Connection projects
Develop and maintain an HV/MV Basis of Design, design and specification templates
Direct our geotechnical consultants
Review engineering designs including foundations, primary and secondary frame, services supports, and gantries
Assess engineering calculation assumptions and evaluate engineering design options
Produce substation site layouts during master planning
Collaborate with relevant Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and Utilities
Coordinate with internal and external MEP Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Construction Managers, and other related disciplines
Identify and spearhead initiatives to improve cost, quality, schedule, and consistency across sites
Travel for site assessments, consultant selection activities, internal design meetings, construction review, interface with AHJs, design consultants, quantity surveyors, and building owners

Detailed understanding of electrical utilities related to building and site construction including evaluation of Civil, Structural, and Architectural design aspects
Have demonstrated knowledge of substations, medium and high voltage distribution, protection and control as related to data center facilities
Be informed of industry design trends
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret electric codes including NEC, NFPA, UL, ANSI as well as utility requirements
