Tetra Tech's Salt Lake City, Ut office is seeking a Senior Structural/Civil Engineer with a minimum of 10 years experience working in the heavy industrial sector (Oil & Gas and Mining). The Senior Engineer will be responsible for the supervision of more junior level engineers, designers and direct the engineering/design activities on structural and civil projects. The candidate must have the ability to perform structural calculations for steel and concrete structures, as well as foundations. A solid knowledge of civil site works, grading, drainage and site infrastructure is also necessary


The Senior Engineer shall demonstrate experience leading heavy industrial engineering projects in a Project Engineering and/or Lead Engineering role. The candidate will be capable of committing to and maintaining a project schedule.

The candidate will report directly to Project Managers, and/or Principal Engineers. The successful candidate will also work directly with clients to provide best managed practices (BMPs) to engineer solutions on moderate and complex structural/civil projects. Some field work at client sites will be required.

This may include field measurements, attending meetings, reviewing drawings and designs. Other duties may be assigned. Knowledge of drafting/design software is essential, and a working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D and 3D applications is a plus.


Candidate shall demonstrate a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in either the Oil & Gas or the Mining industry. A combination of experience working directly for an operating company and a consulting firm is a plus.

Candidate should have knowledge of process plants/facilities, and shall possess an understanding of the safety requirements associated with the heavy industrial sectors. Candidate will have an excellent knowledge of the engineering codes associated with steel and concrete design, will have the ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings, possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

A licensed Professional Engineer, or the ability to become a licensed Professional Engineer within 6 months is highly recommended for consideration of this position. Experience in the use of structural software; RISA, STAAD, RAM Steel, SAP 2000 is highly recommended. Minimum BS degree in engineering from an accredited university is required. A degree in Civil or Structural engineering is preferred but may be replaced with experience in the Structural/Civil disciplines.

An MS degree or higher is a plus. As mentioned earlier, a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience is required for this position.


Candidate may supervise other engineers assigned to projects. Candidate will supervise and direct drafting and design personnel. The direct management of engineering projects may be required if the successful candidate can demonstrate that ability or has the desire to do so.

Your Opportunity The role of Civil Engineer is to work independently and as a team member on a wide range projects under the guidance of a Senior Engineer/Project Manager. A Civil Engineer will perform a variety of tasks which may include analysis, calculations, preparation of exhibits, and construction documents. The projects that a Civil Engineer may be assigned to may be broad, varied, and diverse in scope. Your Key Responsibilities * Utilizes technologies in development of three-dimensional models of civil systems and provides markups for junior engineers/designers. * Prepares and revises documentation in various civil phases. * Participate in coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, subcontractors, and vendors. * Prepares construction items quantity estimates and basic opinion of cost analysis. * Assists senior engineers/designers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing, and schedule. * May lead the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents. * Performs and oversees the performance of calculations using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software. * Utilizes advanced techniques for the analysis of specialized civil elements. * Participates in constructability review. * Conducts quality assurance and quality control on projects. * Assists in the development of new standards and specifications for the civil group. * Works on multiple projects. Your Capabilities and Credentials * Requisite knowledge and application of agency and industry applicable codes. * General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications. * Strong knowledge of civil systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards. * Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies. * Possesses excellent time-management skills. * Thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting, and efficient use of time and resources. * Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule. * Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought. * Thorough understanding of civil engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others. * Strong oral and written communication skills. * Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant design software (AutoCAD Civil3D, StormCAD, WaterCAD, etc.). * This position will require the successful passing of an AutoCADD Evaluation. * Possess a valid driver's license and good driving record. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering. Licensed Professional Engineer. Minimum of 5 years of experience. Local project resume and experience strongly preferred. Experience in directing junior staff in execution of project deliverables is preferred. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
