SUMMARY:

The Senior Engineer is a senior technical advisor, providing technical leadership on complex or specialized projects by performing the following duties.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Technical

  • Responsible for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to their area of expertise.

  • Provides technical engineering expertise to Project Managers, engineers and/or clients to ensure the project complies with all engineering standards, codes, specifications and design instructions.

  • Reviews, analyzes and resolves field and/or design issues.

  • Provides expertise in complex engineering computations involving conventional engineering practices.

  • Serves as the technical specialist on engineering projects of varying size and complexity in field or office in accordance with plans and specifications.

  • Is active in technical societies.

  • Publishes engineering papers and/or articles.

Project Management

  • Responsible for engineering projects of varying size and complexity in field or office in accordance with plans and specifications.

  • Plans, schedules, conducts, and/or coordinates detailed phases of assigned project work.

  • Assists in coordinating project schedules and timely completion of projects.

Business Development / Marketing

  • Assists in ensuring that external client focus is top priority of the region and those systems, processes, and activities that focus on the client at all levels of the region are implemented.

  • Provides technical leadership in the pursuit process, including: proposal preparation, estimating project costs, contract negotiations, project quality, and project profitability.

  • Is available to attend meetings or events outside of normal working hours.

Leadership / Management

  • Provides leadership to project teams and support staff.

  • Supervises all staff necessary to complete assignments.

  • Serves as a coach for other Project Engineers and technical staff.

Operations

  • Actively observes and acts in an appropriate manner related to safety.

  • Ensures that staff needing specialized training in health and safety procedures and practices receives such training and that safety is discussed as an important aspect of their work.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree and/or master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited four-year university. 15 years or more progressive experience in project engineering. Experience in the inspection and/or design of, but not limited to, bridges, roadways, railroads, marinas, and/or ports. Maintains competency in and serves as major firm resource in field of expertise.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Professional Engineer (P.E.) and/or Structural Engineer (S.E.)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret contract documents, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, evaluate facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While in the field, the employee may be required to walk in rugged conditions, work in adverse weather conditions, and stand up to eight hours or more at a time.
