The Position

A9.5% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2024.

An additional 8% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2025.

The City of Ontario's Parks and Street Maintenance Department is responsible for ensuring the City of Ontario's roads are maintained. The Department has an excellent opportunity for a team-oriented individual interested in serving the community by playing a key role as a Senior Street Maintenance Worker!

The Senior Street Maintenance Worker performs skilled work in a variety of street and storm drainage system maintenance, construction and service activities. The duties performed include the operation and use of light to heavy duty equipment for the minor construction and repair of streets, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and street signs.

Additionally, successful candidates will embody the values of the City's Approach to Public Service and demonstrate the qualities of a 5 Tool Player - Leader, Thinker, Operator, Communicator, and Public Servant.

Additionally, the following procedures will apply:

  • Separate Promotional and Open (external) Eligibility Lists will be established to meet the current and future staffing needs of the department(s).

  • The Promotional Eligibility List will be comprised of current City employees (full or part-time) who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.

  • The Open Eligibility List will consist of external applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.

  • The hiring department will consider the Promotional Eligibility List prior to considering candidates on the Open Eligibility List.

Note: This position is subject to mandatory standby duty assignment and emergency call back. Standby duty assignments are rotated biannually. Please note that this is not a "driver" position, applicants should have previous experience related to street construction and maintenance.

The Parks and Maintenance Department

The Parks and Maintenance Department is committed to creating and strengthening community value by enhancing the quality of life in the City of Ontario through our professional services, maintaining and preserving parkland, public facilities, and City infrastructure. This includes the maintenance service programs and operations to the City park system, public grounds, roadway maintenance, storm drains, street sweeping, sidewalks and public right-of-way, tree trimming, graffiti abatement, traffic signs, street painting and striping, debris removal, and contract maintenance services.

Within these program areas, the department provides services for non-structural overlays and pothole repair, landscape and irrigation maintenance, street striping and sign repairs, concrete repair and maintenance of sidewalk/curb/gutter, street sweeping and debris removal, and graffiti abatement.

Examples of Essential Functions

The functions typically performed by the Senior Street Maintenance Worker include the following:

  • Receives daily assignments and tasks that may be completed independently or with the assistance of co-workers.

  • Inspects work areas and performs routine repairs or reports maintenance needs.

  • Participates in all asphalt maintenance including, operating asphalt patching equipment; repairs to concrete sidewalks, curbs and related facilities.

  • Assists in sign and striping work; sign fabrication and installation, thermal plastic installation, and curb painting.

  • Properly sets up and takes down traffic control for assignment per the Work Area Traffic Control Handbook.

  • Operates motorized equipment such as root cutters, cement saws, and mixers used in a variety of street and storm drain maintenance and construction activities.

  • Determines tools, materials, and equipment needed for each job and demonstrates proper use of tools and equipment.

  • Assists in street paving; assists finishers in pouring concrete and setting forms; participates in all concrete maintenance tasks.

  • May coordinate and lead the activities of an assigned work crew.

  • Performs all roadway maintenance tasks per standard weekly schedule and any other unscheduled maintenance needs. Operates all street utility equipment necessary for area of assignment.

  • May perform emergency maintenance in the event of a natural disaster.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

High School diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience

Two years of experience related to street maintenance and street construction work.

Desirable

CA Traffic Control Certifications

Licenses

Valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to obtain a valid Class A CA driver's license with tank vehicle (TV) endorsement prior to completion of probationary period (6 months). May be required to return to work during non- business hours in an emergency situation and to perform work on a scheduled standby assignment.

Note

As part of the selection process for this position, applicants invited to an interview with the hiring department should plan to participate in a practical examination related to the operation of heavy-duty equipment. Applicants must wear (or have available) safety equipment and clothing (boots, gloves, etc.) appropriate for the operation of heavy-duty equipment to their interview.
