Senior Storage Engineer - Hybrid Cloud Enterprise

General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT) has an opportunity for a Sr. Storage Engineer to support a large, complex, enterprise environment supporting multi-petabytes of data in a hybrid cloud environment. In this role, you will work as one of the technical leads for Storage Engineering, responsible for defining the technology strategy and engineering standards for our customer, the National Cancer Institute (NCI). You will evaluate, architect, design, build, test, and document new storage and backup infrastructure, as well as serve as a Level 3 escalation point for existing infrastructure.

NCI is the largest institute within NIH, conducting federal scientific and medical research and made up of approximately 9000+ users. We engineer solutions and manage daily operations for a complex enterprise environment consisting of 1800+ physical & virtual servers, Cloud solutions (mainly AWS), multiple data center facilities that host a variety of custom software applications, as well as supporting Windows, Linux and Mac OS. On this program, GDIT has approximately 200 staff supporting the entire IT Infrastructure for User / Desktop Support, Security, Server, Storage, Application Hosting, Cloud and Data Center Management, Unified Communications, Network and Project Management.

Position is for full time employment with GDIT and will be based at our customer's location in Rockville, MD (Shady Grove area). One day a week teleworking allowed once established on the program and with manager approval.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for technology strategy, engineering standards, methodologies, task-plans and best practices for Storage Engineering.

  • Responsible for the development of reference architectures and technology standards that can be offered as services to our internal customers.

  • Responsible for the design, implementation, security and availability of storage infrastructure, based on business requirements while adhering to tight operations, security, and procedural models.

  • Responsible for complex provisioning, advanced maintenance, data replication, disaster recovery, data migration and documentation for storage environment.

  • Demonstrate a high level of technical expertise to support complex Storage & Backup devices, including SAN, NAS and Backup solutions across multi-tiered and cloud environments under minimal supervision.

  • Operate in complex highly-available, operations-centric datacenter environments and interact with other technology domain experts as required.

  • Function as the lead on key infrastructure projects and initiatives.

  • Write technical design and build documentation for storage infrastructure.

  • Support ITIL procedures, technology strategy, engineering standards, methodologies, task-plans and best practices for Storage Engineering.

  • Mentor junior team members

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills and Experience -

  • Bachelor's degree and 12+ years of IT experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • 5+ years of solid experience managing multi-vendor storage environment

  • Experience working in large, complex, enterprise datacenter environments supporting multi-petabyte of data

  • Advanced knowledge in designing, deploying and supporting Open Systems, Enterprise SAN, NAS and Backup solutions

  • Hands-on experience with Brocade and/or Cisco SAN Switches and Routers

  • Hands-on experience with NetApp and/or Isilon NAS storage arrays

  • Experience with enterprise data migrations

  • Strong understanding of Datacenter consolidation, IaaS, assessment and capacity planning technologies and best practices

  • Strong knowledge of blade system architectures (HP, Cisco, IBM or Dell)

  • Experience with UNIX (Linux, AIX, Solaris), VMware or other hypervisors, and Windows operating environments

  • Experience with storage configuration, volume management and path management software tools (such as LVM, Native MPIO, EMC PowerPath, HDS HDLM, etc.)

  • Experience with Disaster Recovery as it relates to storage systems and data recovery techniques, including disk replication, snapshots, disaster recovery best practices and Commvault

  • Experience in system monitoring tools and techniques for supporting SAN, NAS and Backup operations, alerting and remediation

Desired

  • Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field is preferred

  • Experience supporting enterprise storage and backup solutions in a hybrid cloud model

  • Scripting proficiency in both Windows and UNIX environments

  • Storage and ITIL related certifications are preferred

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong inter-personal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly self-learn new technologies and paradigms

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams on key infrastructure projects with strong, hands-on technical and engineering expertise allied with business acumen, planning, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
