Senior Stock Clerk

Office of Transportation & Mail

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Senior Stock Clerk within the Office of Transportation & Mail.

This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

DEFINITION: Under direction, performs the more difficult and responsible work involved in receiving, storing, and issuing equipment, materials, and supplies, in recording the quantity, cost, type, and amount of material received, stored, and issued, and in requisitioning needed supplies, and/or takes the lead in a small unit; does other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1.Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.

2.One (1) year of experience in receiving, issuing. and storing parts, materials, and supplies in an organized stock room.

3.Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Compiles reports on use of stock handling equipment, adjustments in inventory count and stock records, spoilage of or damage to stock, location changes of stock, and refusal of shipments.

2.Determines method of storage, identification, and stock location.

3.Prepares requisitions for procurement of material and supplies.

4.Prepares periodic, special, or perpetual inventory of stock.

5.Takes the lead in unloading of incoming shipments, and checks for conformity with orders and specifications.

6.Sizes and labels stock when necessary.

7.Sees that stock bins are kept supplied according to size, color, or other description.

8.Assists with training of new employees.

9.Gives assignments to employees.



  1. Refers errors and irregularities to superiors.

  2. Checks supplies against the requisition prior to shipment.

  3. Answers nonroutine and routine inquiries of a limited complexity.

  4. Fills requisitions and issues supplies and materials to authorized persons.

  5. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

  6. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

1.Knowledge of modern stock room methods, practices, and equipment.

2.Knowledge of procedures and methods of recording the kind and quantity of shipments received, in placing the stock in appropriate bins, shelves, and other receptacles and areas to ensure orderliness and safety.

3.Knowledge of procedures and methods of issuing stores when given requisition or when other types of proper authorization are received, and in making periodic physical inventories of the kind and quantity of stores on hand.

4.Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.

5.Ability to take a leading part in working out the internal organization and operating procedures of the stock room.

6.Ability to work harmoniously with others.

7.Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, informative, and legible reports.

8.Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files.

9.Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.



  1. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

REPORTS TO: Department Head

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

1.Salary Range: $51,078 - $53,494 (Salary range updated for School Year 2023-2024)

2.Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months

3.Union Affiliation: Local 617
