Job Description

THIS POSITION IS NOW OPEN TO ALL APPLICANTS

The Department of Administration, Office of Information Technology, is recruiting for a Database Specialist 3 in Juneau or Anchorage!

The position is in the Supervisory Unit (SU) at a range 22.

Who We Are

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) strives to provide reliable and efficient enterprise IT services to our business unit customers across the State of Alaska. In following OIT's vision of "One Government, empowered by innovative technical collaboration", our goal is to reduce complexity, improve efficiency, and encourage creativity to securely provide better government services to all Alaskans.

To do that, the Database Team supports a critical part of customer systems, that being the database availability, security, performance, and recoverability.

A core component to success is having an experienced Database Administrator, who can lead and supervise the team to continued success.

Where You will Work

Once hired, you would be supervising and leading the Database team, with the objective of ensuring the security, recoverability and performance of database systems at the Enterprise level for the State of Alaska.

This position requires senior level Database Administration experience in Microsoft SQL Server and SQL associated products, since you would be mentoring team DBAs and participating in database service related engineering.

The Database Team leader ensures the team uses solid and appropriate analytical capabilities, server logs, application logs, Internet available resources, vendor documentation and their foundational understanding of the network and application stacks to troubleshoot database issues.

The Database Team leader collaborates with networking, directory services, storage, virtualization and security teams; as well as departmental IT staff and business management; to resolve issues.

What Will You Do

The experienced database team leader, supervisor and administrator will have the ability to interact with a variety of interesting and complex State of Alaska systems that provide services to Alaskans. These systems include on-premises virtualization platforms, Microsoft Azure cloud services, Oracle on-premises platforms and also Oracle Cloud platforms. These platforms provide a sufficiently interesting variety of options for learning and advancing your skills.

As an employee with the State of Alaska OIT, you will have access to free Federal VTE training in many Cybersecurity areas of study and courses.

As an employee with the State of Alaska OIT, you will have access to free and unlimited Microsoft Official Training Curriculum and Certification Exams through June 30, 2023.

The OIT database team provides standard active coverage from 7 AM to 5 PM, and on-call coverage for a collection of services 24x7x365; with on-call coverage compensated per union contracts. This allows us some flexibility in daily work scheduling. The team is proactive in many areas and maintains an automated maintenance system developed in PowerShell; that automates verifying backups, running consistency checks and many other day-to-day tasks; allowing the individual to focus on the challenging (and more interesting) tasks of a senior database administrator.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Work areas include either our Anchorage Bayview Office; which is steps from the natural surroundings of Ship Creek, and potential for natural wildlife encounters at every corner; or our Juneau office in the State Office Building, surrounded by picturesque mountains and waterfront walkways.

Telework options are available for Alaskan residents.

Who We Are Looking For

The person we are looking for to fill this position will encapsulate the following desired competencies to contribute to the success of our Database Services Team:

  • Leadership and Supervisory capabilities as well as experience querying database systems in order to retrieve data, including basic knowledge of the principles of indexing and efficient organization of database searches.

  • Programming or scripting in a commonly accepted programming or scripting language. TSQL required, PowerShell desired.

  • Experience troubleshooting complex database systems.

  • Capable and willing to explain issues in layman's terms with business, guiding the process towards consensus, then executing agreed-on course of action to achieve a resolution.
