Position Summary:

  • Staples is looking for a talented and energetic candidate with a passion for product. As a Senior Specialist of Product Development, you will be on point to bring the next generation of private brand technology products to life at Staples. Working with Product Management, Product Design, Merchandising and sourcing, our product developers own the process of going from a concept to a finished product ready for sale. You'll have ownership of making sure we deliver products that meet our quality and cost targets and that they launch on time.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of new and compelling private brand technology products through close collaboration with Product Management, Product Design, Merchandising and Sourcing.

  • Participate in all phases of bringing innovative products to market including ideation, product development, and launch.

  • Serve as an internal product expert and use this expertise to assist Product Management in presenting new products to the Merchant teams.

  • Oversee key development milestones including prototype development, pilot runs, third party testing, initial production runs, final product sample approval, etc.

  • Utilize your project management skills to ensure product development is on track and new products will launch on time.

  • Develop necessary test protocols to ensure products meet our requirements for quality, performance and regulatory compliance

  • Ensure product is clear of any IP issues, and work with Legal to file patents for your product

  • Identify potential manufacturing partners, execute RFPs and drive the final selection of which factory to work with

  • Execute strategy set by Director and Vice President of Product Management and Product Development.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 2 to 4 years of experience in a manufacturing or product development environment

  • Project management, organization, problem solving and negotiating skills

  • Professional communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Prioritization of workload based on business needs

  • Independent thinking and judgment

Position Overview: Works closely with Manager of Design for development of product. Manages and designs apparel for specific product category. Creates mood boards, fabric/color palettes seasonally in collaboration with other members of the design team. Directs and works with CAD designers in house on prints and embellishment boards per season. Creates technical flat sketches for own styles passed to technical designer. Fabricates all styles by fabric, color and print. Works with merchant team to execute vision through a clear merchandising plan. Key Responsibilities: * Continually researches Color & Trend information. * Has full knowledge of competitive products/brands. * Independently travels domestically and overseas to retail shop and attend print and fabric shows. * Interprets design concepts and develops them into new products. * Develops concept boards, sketch library, designs artwork and selects standards using trend and color services. * Selects and purchases original artwork and negotiates pricing. * Designs, develops and executes technically accurate artwork for TJX's licensed brands and private label programs, working with the Product Development team from the concept meeting through the prototype process and artwork execution. * Updates the status of multiple projects, anticipating problems and devising solutions. * Offers strategic/cost effective solutions as needed. * Selects, negotiates, manages and evaluates in-house freelance services for artwork development. * Ensures strict deadlines are met. * Provides direction and delegates projects to freelancers based on ability. * Oversees and maintains trend information, retail information, and color and resource library. * Performs special projects, as assigned. Decision Making: * Develops and implements methods to improve efficiencies and ensures best practices. * Regularly evaluates freelance and external resource base. * Negotiates fees for freelance artists. * Purchases artwork and development samples within R&D budget. * Recommends potential candidates to hire or promote. * Recommends appropriate creative direction. Required Skills: * Degree in Fashion Design or equivalent work experience * PC skills including Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, IGrafix, U4ia, Prima Vision * Detail orientated * Effective communication skills * Developed fashion sense for clothing design and construction * Ability to communicate and interpret conceptual design ideas * Strong organizational and follow through skills * Works well in a team environment * Ability to handle multiple projects * Strong interpersonal skills * Understanding of apparel retail merchandising * Envisions the future and anticipates rends and their implications for the company What's In It For You?
