The Opportunity

This position works out of our Lake Forest, IL location in the Core Diagnostics Division. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

As the Senior Specialist Environmental Health and Safety, you will lead and support EHS management in the development, implementation and monitoring of programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health and safety regulations. Facilitates the investigation and timely identification of incident root cause and corrective action and actively support injury prevention initiatives.

What You'll Work On

  • Monitors the workplace environment in Manufacturing, R&D, Distribution facility and office locations by analyzing work processes, materials, equipment, and the work habits of employees and ensures appropriate corrective action is taken where hazards exist.

  • Develops and oversees EHS training programs for employees in areas such as employee-right-to-know, ergonomics, hazardous material handling, emergency response, industrial hygiene, and life safety.

  • Plans and schedules work to meet deadlines established by others to ensure the completion of several related tasks.

  • Works independently most of the time and uses judgment in data analysis to develop and design solutions to difficult health and safety problems.

  • Performs traditional EHS duties such as job safety analyses, health and safety training, workplace incident investigations, workplace safety inspections, PPE usage and internal audits as directed.

  • Supports EHS team in the management/reporting of all hazardous material and hazardous waste activities including the collection, transportation, and disposal of all hazardous waste in compliance with all applicable regulations.

  • Reviews new hazardous materials and checks incoming material for SDS's, unique usage and storage characteristics. Works with end user to ensure proper usage and disposal. Provides guidance as necessary.

  • Serves as a resource to division management and EHS staff on matters relating to environmental compliance, sustainability, and general safety.

  • Supports EHS management in conducting reviews for facility modification, new product development, product modification and new equipment/machinery as directed.

  • Provides On call support for EHS emergencies.

  • Supports the ISO 14001 /ISO45001/ ISO50001 process and maintenance.

  • Act as a liaison with appropriate regulatory agencies as directed by EHS Director.

  • Works under the supervision of the EHS Director, while independently working and solving day-to-day problems.

  • Applies professional health and safety principles, theories and concepts and uses independent judgment to develop and design imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions to difficult health and safety issues.

  • Leads the management in the maintenance of the facility's Emergency Response and Fire Plans.

  • Coordinates employee exposure monitoring activities for chemical and physical agents, including performing Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling and supporting the activities of contract Industrial Hygienists, chemical spill remediation specialists, and other safety consultants as required.

  • Conducts and coordinates ergonomic risk assessments and making appropriate corrective action recommendations.

  • Leads the selection, training and maintenance of all volunteer employee Safety Coordinators and Chemical Handlers.

  • Coordinates the inspection and procurement of emergency response and disaster preparedness materials and equipment.

  • Supports EHS management in the gathering of data for the establishment of report metrics pertinent to EHS activities.

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the Health and Safety field with both hands on and program management experience. Chemistry experience preferred.

  • Ability to navigate and interpret EHS regulations.

Perform safety audits and inspections to find potential hazards and take corrective actions where issues arise. Provide indirect peer leadership to conduct risk analysis, incident investigations, root cause analysis and implement Health, Safety, and Security processes and procedures. Investigate accidents and incidents to determine what caused them and take steps to prevent them in the future. Ensure incident reports and findings are accurate and entered in the system. May be responsible for reporting incidents to workers compensation employee or vendor. Deliver training to new and current employees on LOTOTO, hazardous material safety, and emergency response procedures; and any hazard that affects employee work.</p><p>Major responsibilities of the position. Other duties, assignments and specific projects may be assigned at the discretion of the Director of EHSS. These duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:</p><ul><li><p>Develop site specific polices/procedures from corporate policies and procedures, execute, manage, and/or continuously improve various health, safety, and safety (EHSS) programs such as lockout/tagout/tryout, contractor safety, safe work permits, powered industrial trucks, lifts/hoists, electrical safety, process safety management, emergency action plan, crisis management, and/or emergency response.</p></li><li><p>Develop site specific SOPs from Corporate SOPs, and executes and manages, and/or continuously improvement.</p></li><li><p>Advises and assists employees regarding health, safety, and security requirements.</p></li><li><p>Helps develop site safety policies and procedures and updates as required.</p></li><li><p>Ensures all regulatory compliance is uploaded into Alchemy and ensure that required training is completed.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that safety awareness training programs are thorough and compliant, and that training is completed. Ensures all Authorized training is conducted, and skills testing is completed.</p></li><li><p>Ensures that all incidents, i.e., injuries, near misses, first aids, security incidents e.g., are reported and accounted for timely in the EHSS Management System. Compiles and distributes summaries of incident reports and corrective actions.</p></li><li><p>Coordinates and manages the Company's EHSS Management system in accordance with established corporate, Federal, state, and local requirements.</p></li><li><p>Investigates health, safety, and security concerns, e.g., hazardous conditions, employee injuries, and near misses, property damage, and other concerns, and advises Departments Leaders on corrective action.</p></li><li><p>Conducts training regarding accident investigation and root cause analysis for supervisors and safety committee members. Oversees completion of injury and incident reports.</p></li><li><p>Arranges and administers safety committee member training and serves as a resource for the committees.</p></li><li><p>Ensures powered Industrial truck operator training and certification is thorough and compliant and that operator certification files are maintained.</p></li><li><p>Conducts First Aid/CPR/AED and &quot;Safety in Motion&quot; ergonomic training and performs ergonomic assessments.</p></li><li><p>Other duties as assigned.</p></li><li><p>Minimum of a high school diploma or GED with specific safety training.
