Senior Special Test Equipment (STE) Engineer

L3 Aviation Products Division (L3 APD), is a leading provider of commercial and military avionics with unsurpassed performance, quality and customer support. L3 APD manufactures a diverse line of safety- and efficiency-enhancing products that set the standard for next-generation requirements, including configurable voice and data recorders, collision avoidance systems, navigation products, display systems and processors.
Support engineering and production needs with regard to Special Test Equipment (STE). Work closely with primary product design engineers, systems engineers, EMI/EMC engineers, and qualification test engineers to ensure requirements are met within cost and schedule. Support Production as needed in their efforts to maintain, diagnose, and repair STE that are exhibiting failures.
Supports and/or leads various electrical and mechanical design activities for new/existing STE including hardware, cables and fixtures.
Oversees the STE Graphical User Interface (GUI) design within engineering or leads the statement of work (SoW) development and subcontract oversight.
EMI/EMC test system design (focus STE, GUIs, OTP and harnesses),
Production floor STE troubleshooting, hardware checkout, and calibration support.
Test and verification procedure development to include OTP/GUI verification and hardware checkout procedure development.
Act as STE design lead during program design reviews.
Support other engineers as a subject matter expert for STE and STE harness designs.
SOW development and subcontractor support and oversight for engineering test asset development and fabrication.
STE cost estimates and proposal development support.
Works under general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
Frequent inter-organizational and outside vendor contacts.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (5-8 years of experience designing complex test equipment preferred) or Masters/PhD degree (3-6 years of experience preferred) from an ABET accredited university.
Ability to perform or learn skills in troubleshooting, problem solving, and decision making under the guidance of peers/superiors when appropriate.
Applies engineering theories/concepts/principles to achieve technical specifications and objectives. Completes assignments and projects within a set schedule. Works effectively in a team environment.
Proficiency in operating electronics laboratory equipment including: digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes (DSO, Mixed Signal), signal generators, DC power supplies, etc.
Works with other disciplines to support goals of the business. Possesses foresight in identifying future problems and proposes potential solutions to the team (proactive).
Background in test for military customers including qualification and EMI testing.
Working knowledge of National Instruments Labview and Teststand software.
Working knowledge of RS-422/485, MIL-STD-1553, RS-232 and other serial protocols
Working knowledge of DVI, ARINC 818, SMPTE, and VGA video.
Experience in the design of high density mixed signal cabling for rugged environments.
