As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will help define structural arrangement concepts for a novel human space transport vehicle. You will work with configuration specialists and systems engineers to conceptualize structural layouts, derive preliminary loads, perform sizing studies, and analyze options to generate a mass efficient, producible and operable reusable airframe capable of operating during ascent to orbit, in space, and reentry and landing. You will be balancing personal experience, historical best practices, and creativity to rapidly develop multiple designs as we converge on an overall preferred configuration. Subsequently, you will be helping define the requirements and environments as the program matures and will help in creating the team that performs detailed design, fabrication, and test. This position will directly impact the history of human space flight and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.
Develop preliminary concepts to facilitate efficient primary and secondary structure.
Create loads model which envelopes the environments in which the vehicle is expected to perform.
Perform initial sizing and preliminary optimization of structural arrangements, and estimate mass and cost
Create scalable analysis and modeling infrastructure to support rapid turnaround and reporting of loads analysis
Create drawings, renderings, and 3D models to communicate the general approach to structural design that effectively transmits primary and secondary flight and pressure loads
Work with configurators to accommodate subsystems and access requirements
Develop concepts for the manufacturing sequence, equipment, tooling, and timelines required to fabricate designs
Participate in a small, agile team to create and adapt to shifting priorities
B.S. degree in engineering
10+ years of relevant experience as a member of hardware development teams, including preliminary and detail design organizations
Loads and dynamics modeling skills
CREO modeling skills
Demonstrated experience on spacecraft, launch vehicles, or aircraft in at least three of the following areas:
Free-body diagramming for internal and reaction load derivation
Analysis of metallic and/or composite structures (skin-stringer, fittings, sandwich panels, etc.)
Analysis of stability critical structures
Mid-surfacing and generation of plate element meshes for large assembly models
Familiarity with classical aerospace sizing methods (Bruhn, Niu, Roark, etc.)
Demonstrated proficiency with one or more of the following analysis codes: Nastran, Ansys, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, Optistruct
Experience on recently developed vehicles in one or more of the following areas:
Vehicle load path distribution and first order strength assessment and sizing.
Skin-stringer and sandwich panel fuselage design.
Shell buckling and/or compressive failure critical structural element design.
Material selection, compatibility and manufacturing techniques.
Iso/Ortho grid structure design.
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Requirements development experience and strong technical writing skills
Self-starter with a continuous improvement mindset and ability to learn
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Knowledge of spacecraft design, hypersonic vehicles, and re-entry systems
Experience in structural optimization techniques
Experience in design for manufacturability, tooling, and design to cost
Mass and cost estimation experience and techniques
Familiarity with metallic, composite, and ceramic materials
Familiarity with thermal protection systems, thermal and acoustic insulation, and MMOD protection.
