Senior Software Engineer (Platform/Embedded Software)

As a flight software engineer on the OS Platform team, you will be creating software that is used to design, develop, launch and operate SpaceX flight systems. You will engage with other SpaceX engineers to discover the needs of the mission and code highly reliable software that turns the mission into a reality. You will be responsible for the complete lifecycle of the software you create, from development to testing to operation during a mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop highly reliable and available software systems

  • Board bring-up of next-generation avionics computers

  • Develop prototypes to prove out key design concepts and quantify technical constraints

  • Write high quality structured bare metal and Linux-based software for embedded processors (e.g. ARM, PowerPC, x86, etc.)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or science discipline and 4+ years of experience in syste-ms-level C (kernels, device drivers, hypervisors) OR 6+ years of experience in systems-level C (kernels, device drivers, hypervisors)

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience writing Linux kernel code for real-time systems

  • Experience in FPGA development

  • Working experience of microprocessor technology including (but not limited to); PowerPC, ARM, OMAP, etc.

  • Fluency in POSIX shell script and Python

  • Have shipped embedded software in high volume products or real-time products that require high reliability and fault tolerance

  • Significant understanding of embedded software principles and ability to contribute in design sessions

  • Thorough knowledge of systems, computer architecture, software development, networks, and electronics

  • Strong skills in debugging, performance optimization and unit testing

  • Effectively worked as a team member and in large code bases

  • Creative approach to problem solving and exceptional analytical skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing needs and requirements

  • Ability to work independently and in a team, take initiative, and communicate effectively

Additional Requirements:

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends when needed

We believe the only way to achieve our goals is to look at the entire stack, from transistor, through architecture, to firmware, and algorithms. We are seeking an Embedded Software (Firmware) Engineer to support development of ASICs custom-designed for computer vision and machine learning. The successful candidate will be part of a team that includes algorithm, user experience, software, firmware and silicon experts. The ideal candidate will understand low-level embedded software development for custom low-power SoC. This is a full-time position based in either our Redmond, WA or Menlo Park, CA offices. RESPONSIBILITIES * Embedded firmware architecture and design to orchestrate hardware accelerators End-to-system firmware development to include power-management, boot loaders, scheduling, RTOS and/or bare-metal implementations Develop OS custom kernel drivers and APIs for hardware accelerators and peripherals Support all phases of SoC development – including early architecture requirements definition for custom silicon, firmware architecture, implementation, simulation, FPGA debug, chip bringup and support systems and software teams on algorithm development on validated systems MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * B.S. degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and 2+ years of experience in firmware development Experience in software design and programming in C/C++ for development, debugging, testing and performance analysis Experience in understanding hardware, clock-level issues, bridges, delays, interrupts, clock gating, polling etc. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware design for low-power mobile SoC Experience with lab instrumentation like oscilloscope, logic/protocol analyzers for debugging embedded systems at HW level Familiarity with embedded micro-controllers' architecture Hands-on coding experience with peripherals such as UART, SPI, CSI-2, i2c, GPIO, USB Experience in real-time processing for computer vision and user interaction tasks, high-compute/throughput systems and using simulation and modeling technique to estimate performance and power Hands-on experience with FPGA and hardware evaluation boards, EDA design tools, and/or ISA simulators Facebook Redmond WA
