Senior Software Engineer - Verathon R&D

Verathon has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer to become the newest member of our Imaging and Scanning Solutions Research & Development team located in our Bothell, WA headquarters.

Position Summary:

The Senior Software Engineer is expected to work with the team to provide technical acumen and apply software development skills across a variety of technologies This position encompasses both research and medical product development using a formal quality system.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to product development programs as a design engineer and team leader

  • Designs software solutions, creates analyses, and completes difficult and challenging project assignments

  • Develops firmware and unit tests for embedded Linux and bare metal systems, primarily using C/C++.

  • Delivers robust software releases for medical devices under a formal quality system (IEC-62304), and as needed, supports these releases in manufacturing.

  • Uses advanced engineering methods and techniques to solve technical problems of broad scope and complexity

  • Conducts advanced simulations, tests prototypes, and prepares technical reports and documentation

  • Supports sustaining activities for current products

  • As a recognized technical specialist, serves as a consultant advising others on technical problems and reviewing their work for accuracy and completeness

  • Participates in project planning and ensures assigned tasks are completed according to schedule

  • Provides technical guidance to technicians and other functions supporting product development

  • Modifies established procedures, devises new approaches, and drives continuous improvement in their functional area

  • As member of the R&D team, participates in staff meetings providing feedback based on observation and experience

  • Represents the organization and project team with external partners and key stakeholders

  • Coaches and mentors engineering staff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or Compute Engineering. Advanced degree such as Master's or PhD is preferred.

  • 5+ years of technical product development experience as team lead delivering software for embedded devices

  • Demonstrated expertise, originality, and ingenuity for devising practical and economical software solutions to technical issues

  • Accomplished in solving cross-disciplinary problems within multi-disciplinary teams

  • Proven ability to make responsible decisions on technical matters within area of expertise

  • Experienced working with a group of highly qualified professionals engaged in designing technical products and applications

  • Applies technical expertise in embedded systems and has knowledge of other related disciplines

  • Experience developing firmware for ARM Cortex-Mx or other 32-bit MCU (bare metal, device drivers, and state machines) using IDEs such as IAR, Keil, etc.

  • Ability to develop products and processes using knowledge of customer needs, technology, and business acumen

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Experienced working with a group of highly qualified professionals engaged in designing technical products and applications


  • Strong knowledge of Agile or Scrum development methodologies

  • Experience developing/debugging Linux kernel drivers and user-level drivers

  • Product development experience in a medical device environment specific to diagnostic imaging

  • Experience with medical devices performing real-time data acquisition
