Description

Who We Are

ButcherBox is a fast-paced, rapidly growing company headquartered in Brighton, MA. We work to connect people with the food they want to eat. While we began by only providing 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef to our members, we have since expanded our offerings to include free-range organic chicken, heritage-breed pork, wild-caught Alaskan sockeye salmon and more.

The team at ButcherBox believes in a healthier food system where everyone has access to meat the way Nature intended: from animals that are humanely raised and never given any antibiotics or added hormones. ButcherBox exists to ensure that access to high-quality meat you can trust is convenient.

We provide better meat for a better you. Our team is made up of people who collaborate and support one another. We're growing quickly, and we are always looking for outstanding people to join our mission!

Our Engineering Team

Our software engineering team owns the code that runs our business. We maintain many different codebases - from the services and third-party integrations that handle subscriptions, billing, and shipping, to our customer-facing e-commerce website.

We work in two-week sprints, including daily standup meetings and bi-weekly planning and retrospective meetings. We value strong attention to detail, and because we believe in personal accountability, we place a large amount of autonomy on our engineers.

Who You Are

Role

We're looking for someone to step into our engineering organization and make an impact within their team. We expect them to proactively support more junior team members to help them to be successful. They will take accountability for the design and delivery of medium to large size features, while also reducing the system's tech debt.

Experience

Our ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of good programming principles and common design patterns. We strive to give full-stack opportunities, so we tend to look for experience that spans the entire stack and/or an ability to learn quickly to fill gaps in knowledge.

Most of our engineers currently work in PHP APIs and React frontends. Experience in these technologies is great, but not required. Because we work with MySQL, we do expect some experience in that or a similar relational database. Any experience with common frameworks is preferable too.

What Success Looks Like

By the 90-day point, we expect that a new senior engineer will have familiarized enough with our current tech stack, tools, and processes that they can be actively contributing features and bug fixes to our production systems, and helping to hold their other team members accountable.

Six months in, a Senior Engineer in our organization should be the go-to person on their team for one or more technologies and should be taking initiative to learn new ones. They should be designing and implementing increasingly larger features, challenging the team processes and looking for ways to improve upon them.
