We are building an AI-based assistant capable of perceiving context, reasoning using knowledge and goals, making decisions, and taking actions to empower Asana users. The core technology powering the assistant is an agentic framework - a set of rational, autonomous systems that work together, coordinating and collaborating to achieve objectives. As a senior product engineer on the team, you will have the unique opportunity to not only architect this groundbreaking framework but also build the AI assistant itself. You'll work across the stack, from designing robust backend frameworks to crafting intuitive and delightful user interfaces, creating seamless user experiences that integrate AI into every aspect of our product.

This is a chance to be one of Asana's experts on harnessing the power of AI to revolutionize how teams collaborate and get work done. You'll dive into some of the most complex and exciting challenges at the intersection of AI and product engineering - from agent-based modeling to inter-agent communication protocols to AI-human interaction paradigms. You'll work on both backend data modeling and frontend UI development, ensuring that the human-in-the-loop interactions and complex editing flows are fluid and easy to use. This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. What you'll achieve

• Design and build an agentic framework to support multi-agent collaboration and decision-making, and develop the AI assistant powered by specialized agents

• Create delightful user experiences focusing on human-in-the-loop interactions and complex, nuanced editing flows, where users will be editing work graph objects like tasks, projects, dashboards, and portfolios.

• Tackle cutting-edge challenges around agent-based modeling, emergent behaviors, safety considerations, and more as you collaborate cross-functionally to integrate AI into Asana's core architectures

• Participate in every step of the product development process, working closely with PMs, customers, and cross-functional teams to deliver large, impactful projects

• Experience growth through opportunities to stretch, learn, and shape the trajectory of AI at Asana

About you

• 4+ years experience, working across the stack within large, well-maintained codebases

• Track record of autonomously and reliably scoping and delivering complex, cross-cutting product initiatives, often by coordinating the work of multiple engineers

• Comfort navigating ambiguity and taking on open-ended AI/product challenges

• Fascination with the potential of AI and eagerness to apply it to transform how we work

• Excellent communicator and cross-functional collaborator

We believe that compensation should be reflective of the value you create relative to the market value of your role. To ensure pay is fair and not impacted by biases, we're committed to looking at market value which is why we check ourselves and conduct a yearly pay equity audit.

For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $202,000 - $316,000 The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.

In addition to base salary, your compensation package may include additional components such as equity, sales incentive pay (for most sales roles), and benefits.
