ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer's Oncology Research Unit (ORU) in La Jolla, California, is seeking a Senior Scientist (PhD) focused on translating basic discoveries in the field of cancer epigenetics into novel therapeutics.

Our ideal candidate will be a dedicated scientist who will be supporting pre-clinical stage drug discovery programs. The candidate should have a strong background in cancer epigenetics with hands-on expertise in state of the art genetic and epigenetic approaches coupled with next-generation sequencing technologies to gain a broader understanding of MOA and target validation of novel cancer therapeutics. As a member of the group, the candidate will work together with a highly motivated and scientifically rigorous team of scientists to perform laboratory-based research in a collaborative team environment, interpret and present findings at team/project meetings and function as an integral member of the epigenetics team to advance drug programs. The successful candidate will have experience in analysis and integration of molecular profiling data including epigenomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and genomic datasets, into a broader understanding of epigenetic regulation in the tumor microenvironment.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, execute and analyze/interpret experiments to advance targets validation studies and mechanism of action to identify new therapeutic targets that can be translated to the clinic

  • Utilize expertise in epigenetic biology to develop innovative strategies for understanding role of epigenetic mechanisms in cancer progression, drug resistance and immune modulation

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams including computational biology group to integrate complex data sets including epigenomic and other 'omic' data in pre-clinical settings for target validation and advance mechanism of action target biology.

  • Experience in collaborating with external partners (e.g. CROs) to design experiments, supervise their execution and analyze the data to support preclinical PoC studies

  • Interface with discovery biology, systems biology and computational biology groups to design, develop, and interpret datasets developed from genetic and pharmacological screens

  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program

  • Present research results and methodologies at weekly meetings with immediate supervisor and/or project leader, project team meetings and other research forums

  • Contribute to building a culture that embraces scientific excellence, urgency, partnerships with key stakeholders, continuous learning, and improvement, increasing technical skill base and cancer biology expertise; take a proactive role in personal growth and scientific development

QUALIFICATIONS

Training & Education:

  • PhD or MD/PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics or Epigenetics (or a comparable biological science) with a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant postdoctoral experience in an academic or pharmaceutical/biotech environment.

  • Expertise in experimental approaches to study chromatin biology, epigenetics and mechanism of transcriptional regulation as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of software tools to support epigenomic data analysis including ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, Cut&Run, RNA-seq and Bru-seq. Expertise with using R for data analysis and visualization is highly desirable.

  • Preference for candidates with a strong track record in cancer drug discovery/translational research and the development of small-molecule inhibitors.

  • Ability to work in a team environment, good communication skills and excellent leaderships skills.
