Job Description

Kite Pharma is seeking an experienced scientist to lead the T cell production group within the preclinical research organization in Emeryville. The successful candidate will lead a team which plays an important core function in bridging early in vitro research to preclinical in vivo work through the production and characterization of CAR T cells.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include, but not limited to):

  • Establish and maintain donor screening and supply functions for preclinical studies.

  • Optimization of T cell expansion processes, enrichment and activation.

  • Hands-on proficiency in T cell culture and use of analytical tools and techniques to characterize T cells including cytokine, cytotoxicity and proliferation assays.

  • Experience in multi-parameter flow cytometry and data analysis.

  • Prior experience working with viral vectors for gene delivery to mammalian cells.

  • Application of technologies and tools to improve efficiency of T cell production.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain detailed documentation of research activities.

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and able embrace change and deploy resources to provide key deliverables.

  • Independently investigate and/or collaborate with other internal groups to explore alternative non-viral gene delivery systems or novel culture mediums for cell growth.

  • Recruit, develop and mentor a team of scientists.

  • Excellent oral and written skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or a closely related field.

  • Minimum PhD +5 - 10 years of relevant experience in the field.

  • Prior experience with cell therapy is highly desired.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with and effectively influence others.

In this role, you will contribute to the company's efforts to develop next-generation cell therapies in solid tumor malignancies. The successful candidate will have a strong molecular biology, cell biology and/or immunology background and will be expected to work in a collaborative cross-functional team environment, perform experiments, organize and analyze results, communicate effectively and present findings in team meetings. Job description * Plan and execute experiments against project timelines and goals. * Work with a scientist to establish several novel platforms for adoptive T cell therapies. * Employ genetic and engineering strategies for the genetic modifications of human T cells with novel tumor recognition and killing systems. * Employ novel cutting edge exploratory technologies to improve existing T cell therapies. * Engineer and culture human T cells and characterize their function. * Make and maintain T cell lines. * Coordinate tasks across multiple projects, demonstrating the ability to prioritize and plan. * Maintain clear and thorough laboratory records. * Maintain inventories of plasmid DNAs and cell lines * Efficiently and clearly communicate research plans and results in both oral and written form. Qualifications: * B.S. or M.S. degree in biology-related field required; degree in Immunology or Cell Biology is preferred. * 2+ years of experience in an academic or industry setting * Demonstrate the ability to work independently or with reasonable supervision to design experiments, execute data analysis, interpret and present data. * Maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. * Have a motivation to learn new techniques and make a meaningful impact on team's work progress. * Desire to work in a flexible, highly dynamic and fast-paced environment * Strong collaboration and communication skills Demonstrated hands on experience in the following techniques: * Cell culture, including culturing primary T cells; * Primary T cell-based assays such as cytotoxicity assays, cell proliferation assays, etc. * Multicolor flow cytometry and data analysis; * Data collection and analysis software (FACSDiva, FlowJo, GraphPad Prism, Excel); * Experience in retroviral or lentiviral vectors is a strong plus Experience in molecular biology techniques (molecular cloning, PCR, transfection, viral transduction, DNA sequencing, NGS) is a strong plus. * LI-RK1 IND-123.
