The Sr Engineer, Building Systems and Components Design, reporting to the Director, R&D, is expected to be a key contributor and contributor providing designs that create value through ease of installation and materials optimization. These designs will initial focus on our railing systems (composite, aluminum, and steel), but will expand over time as the team grows to include work on decking, cladding, and exterior wall assemblies and components. You will lead projects focused on the design and structural analysis of the components and systems. You will also lead projects to transition the designs to internal and external manufacturing partners. You will coordinate with the Materials and Structural Testing Group on testing to achieve the required code performance. Coordinate/fabricate 3-D models and other prototypes to demonstrate features and installation methods to the project team. The individual is relied upon for design, modeling, and analysis of these products/components, leading projects and major tasks on product innovations and line extensions. This individual will contribute to building out our design and modeling capabilities to provide for long-term business impact and growth.
Drafting and design work of Building Systems and Components (e.g. rails, balusters, brackets, post covers, lighting components, etc.)
Creation and revision of CAD models and drawings using computer software (e.g. SolidWorks)
Exporting designs to digital prototyping equipment (CNC or 3-D printing) using current CAD CAM software
Prepare designs for manufacturability assessments with internal and external partners
Participate in overall engineering troubleshooting
Lead projects using Stage Gate and partner with Operations, or external partner, through Project Implementation
Deliver solutions to optimize component cost and contribute to solutions for total installed cost/ease of installation for components and systems
Add designs to and maintain Product Design library, and coordinate with Engineering and IT on a unified archive
Become expert in the CAD/CAE/FEA internal tool set necessary to support business objectives
Be responsible for prototyping tools within R&D
Contribute to development of standardized design criteria across all product lines
Participate in brainstorming and cross-departmental meetings to ensure collaboration
Participate in the technical review and validation of design concepts, ensuring alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including marketing, sales, engineering, operations and customer service to understand market needs and incorporate feedback into product designs.
Evaluate new materials and technologies into product designs to enhance performance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.
Develop project timelines, ensuring timely delivery of design milestones and project goals.
Participate in and lead failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and risk assessments on new and existing products to identify potential issues and implement corrective actions.
Stay current with advancements in the field of building systems and components design and apply new knowledge to continuously improve product offerings.
