The Senior Scientist is primarily responsible for performing and managing scientific and technical activities, which may also include responsibility for the management of scientific staff. Proficient or develop expertise in Scleroderma/fibrotic mechanisms and expand knowledge on other immunology and respiratory research areas by keeping abreast of relevant literature. Candidate must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proven track record of high research accountability and productivity both independently with minimal supervision and within a team setting in a matrix environment.

Lead scientific concepts and projects in the area of Scleroderma to generate data that helps drive highly differentiated disease positioning concepts. Collaborate with other functions and global Discovery Research groups to establish and implement highly differentiated data packages that will help projects move with early concepts for patient enrichment. Develop strong understanding to link various immunological pathways and their relevance to Scleroderma pathogenesis. Establish and maintain external collaborations to utilize patient samples for developing disease linkages and to strengthen value proposition of drug concepts and to deliver first in class therapies. Manage and prioritize multiple projects within the laboratory and interface with Drug discover concept group, exploratory innovation group and in vivo groups. As appropriate, serve as the biology Research Project Leader on I&R portfolio projects.Serve as a mentor for junior staff for effective planning and conduct of laboratory experiments and thorough evaluation and interpretation of data.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement experimental ideas for delivering highly differentiated disease positioning concepts for targets in portfolio. Drive novel science by bringing new methods and assays relevant to Scleroderma.

  • Skilled in human cellular assay systems linked to fibrosis to establish strong NTC to disease linkage concepts using state of the art human disease ex vivo/in vitro models.

  • Collaborate with in vivo group to enable back translation of human disease-relevant mechanisms to in vivo models

  • Keep abreast of current literature and be able to lead external collaborations.

  • Develop scientific staff and mentor them in their experiments and for creating growth opportunities

  • Ensure compliance with all required training, safety, regulatory, HR, laboratory notebook, and intellectual property activities and corporate policies.

Requirements:

  • PhD, Doctoral degree in Biology, Immunology, and/or Fibrosis or related degree

  • At least 2-4 years of post-doctoral training or drug discovery experience in pharmaceutical industry or biotech, or equivalent preferred.

  • A proven track record of high research productivity in immunology and/or fibrotic diseases. Deep understanding of mechanisms and pathways in fibrotic diseases.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proven track record of high research accountability and productivity both independently with minimal supervision and within a team setting in a matrix environment.

  • The successful candidate will be an ambitious self-starter, be motivated to apply his/her skills to impact project needs and drive key innovative scientific concepts, and enjoy working in a fast-paced dynamic team environment and proven ability to focus and deliver high quality data that support timely decisions for projects.

  • Ability to mentor bench scientists to deliver high quality data to contribute to overall program goals. Ability to proactive identification of critical issues and communicate effectively both orally and in writing in an inter-disciplinary environment.

Located in close proximity to New York we harbor the R&D activities of Boehringer Ingelheim in the US. Description: Breakthrough medicines for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are urgently needed. In this opportunity, the successful candidate will devise unique in vivo solutions to address key questions related to halting NASH disease progression and reversal of liver fibrosis. The scientist in this role will support advancement of novel drugs for NASH including in vivo model development, target validation, biomarker integration, mechanistic and functional assay development, and drug candidate evaluation. Success in this endeavor will require a high-level of expertise in both classical in vivo pharmacology as well as application of cutting-edge technologies to build models with translational relevance to human disease.
