Our Materials and Chemistry team within our Corporate Technology group is looking for a Senior Scientist to develop new bio-separation technologies to be used in our emerging Life Science product portfolio. The position is in Durham, NC, but will involve some travel to our research facilities in Bloomington, MN.

Role Responsibilities:

• Lead research programs into new separation technologies related to bioprocessing including material development, characterization, and testing.

• Provide subject matter expertise on materials, including polymers, biomaterials, coatings, and adsorbents.

• Design experiments, statistically analyze test results, and write technical project reports.

• Develop procedures, test benches, and equipment to produce and characterize new materials and separation techniques.

• Maintain continuous education on the material technology state-of-the-art related to bioprocessing.

• Evaluate external opportunities related to bioprocessing technologies and incorporate promising technologies into internal portfolio.

• Share regular project updates in the form of technical reports and presentations to peer review groups as well as senior management.

• Contribute to IP analysis, writing, and filing.

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field and 0-3 years relevant industrial experience or master's with 5-8 years relevant industrial experience.

• Proven track record of new materials development including the generation and testing of new materials.

• Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience, including experience in BSL-1 and/or BSL-2 environments.

• Ability to communicate effectively to small and large groups including senior management.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of biomolecule separation and purification, including techniques such as tangential flow filtration and chromatography.

• Familiarity with bio-analytical test methods including ELISA, SDS-PAGE, PCR and Western blot.

• Experience growing mammalian and microbial cells in lab-scale bioreactors.

• Demonstrated research on biomaterials, including biopolymer design, protein synthesis, or bio-polymer characterization.

• Hands on experience producing and purifying viral vectors.

• Ability to read and understand patents. Familiarity with IP best practices.

• Must have good work attitude and the ability to work in a matrixed environment.
