POSITION SUMMARY:

Initiates, directs and executes pre-clinical scientific research and/or product development. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problem solving. Plans and executes laboratory research. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. Must have experience with next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing (NGS) and nucleic-acid technologies

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contributes substantially and intellectually to research or development

  • Leads projects to create and develop novel nucleic acid based diagnostic tests; including planning, feasibility testing, protocol development, optimization, verification, validation, and launch

  • Responsible for executing projects as per associated timelines and deliverables

  • Thoroughly comprehends the objectives and vision of the work

  • Independently develops plans, generates and advances new ideas

  • Independently designs and executes moderate to high complexity experiments

  • Coordinates the execution and analysis of effective experiments with statistics and bioinformatics teams

  • Performs basic data analysis (e.g. R, JMP, Excel)

  • May manage Research Associates

  • Documents research progress under a Quality Management System

  • Works with partners and outside collaborators

  • Communicates progress directly with colleagues and senior management

  • This role works with PHI on a regular basis both in paper and electronic form and has access to various technologies to access PHI (paper and electronic) in order to perform the job

  • Employee must complete training relating to HIPAA/PHI privacy, General Policies and Procedure Compliance training and security training as soon as possible but not later than the first 30 days of hire.

  • Must maintain a current status on Natera training requirements.

  • Employee must pass post offer criminal background check.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology or closely related field, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of 5 - 8 years of industry experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and related molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA sample prep from multiple sources, library construction, whole genome/exome sequencing, target capture, universal and targeted amplification, etc and subsequent data analysis and interpretation.

  • Track record of originating, developing and productizing novel nucleic acid techniques and tests

  • Must have excellent communication, organizational, record-keeping, planning and time management skills

  • Proven success in managing collaborative and individual projects, previous experience managing research associates a plus

  • Demonstrated success in applying independent scientific judgment in experimental design and analysis

  • Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Adept with Excel and basic statistical analysis

  • Bioinformatics capabilities, programming (e.g. PERL, python) and database experience (SQL) are a plus

  • Skilled at writing clear plans, reports and SOPs

  • Experience with Design Control in a regulated environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Duties are typically performed in an office setting.

  • This position requires the ability to use a computer keyboard, communicate over the telephone and read printed material.

  • Duties may require working outside normal working hours (evenings and weekends) at times.

Works hands on at the bench to carry out experiments and studies with minimal guidance. Performs research and/or development tasks in collaboration with others. Makes detailed observations, analyzes data, and interprets results. Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement. Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Design, plan, and perform experiments geared towards the research and development of non-invasive prenatal tests and cancer detection tests. Execute in-lab efforts to develop novel nucleic acid based tests, including planning, feasibility testing, protocol development, optimization, verification, and validation. Responsibilities will include: Autonomously and accurately plan and execute complex laboratory experiments Extremely capable hands on laboratory researcher able to efficiently deliver high quality work Analyze data using advanced analytical tools Keep a detailed laboratory notebook; write protocols and experimental plans, and document results and scientific interpretations Contribute insight toward experimental findings and trouble-shoot laboratory processes and protocols Communicate and discuss results with a multidisciplinary team including biologists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, software engineers and managers Summarize work in research reports and laboratory meeting presentations Learn and understand the science behind ongoing research projects while simultaneously completing increasingly complex tasks. Track record of developing new methodologies and novel nucleic acid techniques related to next-generation library preparation, PCR, qPCR, and multiplex PCR. Extensive experience with Next Generation Sequencing techniques and protocols. Experience optimizing new methodologies and novel nucleic acid techniques and tests. Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated success in applying independent scientific judgment in experimental design and analysis. Proven success in managing individual projects, skilled at writing clear reports, and experience with Design Control. Strong experience with next generation sequencing techniques and protocols.
