Under the general direction of the Chair, Program Direction or designee, the Senior Scientific Writer is responsible for collaborating with faculty, Departments of Communications and Development to promote internal and external communications to a wide range of constituents and assist in the development of grant proposals, scientific communications and publications.



  • Responsible for developing and submitting a variety of scientific materials for peer reviewed journals, internal and external print and website communications.

  • Plan and prepare major departmental grant initiatives

  • Work with Offices of Faculty Affairs and Research to facilitate faculty and staff virtual networks, and promote education and career events for department

  • Collaborate with Communications and Development to promote internal and external communications for the department/center.

  • Maintain social media presences for lay audiences

  • Plan and execute Symposiums and other focused events

  • Assist in the identification and development of training materials

  • Edits and proofreads articles, book chapters, grants, abstracts, posters, oral and visual presentations for style and content

  • Prepares figures and illustrations for publications

  • Conducts review of medical literature and summarizes findings

  • Work with the Chair/Director to identify and maintain a cost effective scientific and public communication plan

  • Perform other job duties as required.



  • Master's degree in a scientific, health care or communications field

  • 5 years of related scientific/ health care communication experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media communications

  • Experience with grant applications and scientific and publication

  • Experience in using computer-based tools (Microsoft Office, Adobe applications, webpage design tools etc)

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organization, analytical, and interpersonal skills required.

The Precision Medicine Department at Abbvie is committed to advancing drug development and patient care through building a deeper understanding of disease biology, developing tools to optimize clinical decision making and customize treatment for patients. AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated and experienced translational scientist to build and lead an internal Immunology Translational Science Group to generate original research, interrogate new hypothesis, and develop assays and tools for use in the clinic to advance AbbVie's Immunology pipeline from pre-clinical Discovery through Development. Key Responsibilities: Build and lead an internal team of highly experienced and accomplished translational research scientists and develop productive collaborations with cross-functional teams. Design hypothesis driven experimental strategies to identify target engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarkers, mechanisms of disease pathology and drug response/resistance, and inform on patient selection stratification and selection strategies. Define and implement translational research strategies for multiple Immunology programs. Interrogate disease/target biology and interpret data from preclinical and clinical studies to conceive and execute novel scientific research internally or externally to support advancement of the Immunology pipeline. Initiate new areas of investigation and implement cutting-edge technologies that are scientifically meaningful, reliable and can be incorporated directly into a clinical development program. Build external collaborations that complement internal efforts to advance mechanistic understanding of therapeutics and inform development opportunities. Prepare and present summaries of translational data for discussions with key stake holders across multiple functional areas. Qualifications Qualifications: PhD and typically 10+ years of experience, Master's Degree or equivalent education and typically 16+ years of experience in academia or industry. Background and expertise in Immunology is strongly preferred. Experience in Rheumatology, Gastroenterology or Dermatology is a plus. Demonstrated excellence and productivity in independent research. Demonstrated success as primary or senior author of publications, presentations and/or primary inventor of patents. Demonstrated ability to function as a principal investigator, generating original ideas and research or development strategies. Demonstrate creative 'out of the box' thinking to solve difficult problems. Experience managing teams of 10+ scientists (PhD/MS). Experience with conducting translational research in clinical trials is a plus.
