Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Department of Systems Biology (DSB) at UMass Chan Medical School focuses on major questions in the broad field of Systems Biology, ranging from how bacteria affect physiology and drug responses, to how the genome folds and is expressed, to how cells and organisms die or live. DSB science uses experimental approaches in a variety of model systems, both established (worms, yeast, mice) and novel (dinoflagellates), computational approaches to network biology, and mathematical modeling. The DSB evolved from the Program in Systems Biology, which was founded in 2011. The Department currently hosts seven tenured or tenure-track faculty and is projected to grow substantially over the next years. DSB aims to be among the leading Systems Biology departments in the country through the pursuit of cutting edge interdisciplinary and collaborative research, and by teaching and training scientists in disciplines ranging from genomics, genetics, computational biology, and biophysics. The DSB boasts an open and inclusive culture where trainees, faculty, and staff from all stages in their career are strongly encouraged to participate, so they can reach their full potential.

Under the general direction of the Chair, Program Direction or designee, the Senior Scientific Writer is responsible for collaborating with faculty, Departments of Communications and Development to promote internal and external communications to a wide range of constituents and assist in the development of grant proposals, scientific communications and publications.

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for developing and submitting a variety of scientific materials for peer reviewed journals, internal and external print and website communications.

  • Plan and prepare major departmental grant initiatives

  • Work with Offices of Faculty Affairs and Research to facilitate faculty and staff virtual networks, and promote education and career events for department

  • Collaborate with Communications and Development to promote internal and external communications for the department/center.

  • Maintain social media presences for lay audiences

  • Plan and execute Symposiums and other focused events

  • Assist in the identification and development of training materials

  • Edits and proofreads articles, book chapters, grants, abstracts, posters, oral and visual presentations for style and content

  • Prepares figures and illustrations for publications

  • Conducts review of medical literature and summarizes findings

  • Work with the Chair/Director to identify and maintain a cost effective scientific and public communication plan

  • Perform other job duties as required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in a scientific, health care or communications field

  • 5 years of related scientific/ health care communication experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media communications

  • Experience with grant applications and scientific and publication

  • Experience in using computer-based tools (Microsoft Office, Adobe applications, webpage design tools etc)

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organization, analytical, and interpersonal skills required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D in a related field

This is an exciting period of growth in the department and related institute and programs. This vibrant department has 20 tenured/ tenure track faculty and is undergoing a period of growth and recruitment. The department's goal is to bring a molecular perspective to solving problems in fundamental biology and medicine. Under the general direction of the Chair, or designee, the Senior Scientific Writer will work with diverse faculty, staff, postdoctoral associates and students to develop grant and fellowship proposals, scientific communications and publications. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Edit and preview a variety of scientific materials for peer-reviewed journals and website communications * Collaborate with departmental personnel to plan and prepare small and large grant proposals, including fellowships, private, state and federal (NIH, DoD, NSF, etc) opportunities * Communicate openly with faculty, staff, postdoctoral associates and students * Promoting and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion * Prepare figures and illustrations for publications and grants * Conduct a review of scientific literature and summarize findings * Superior judgment, sharp editing, strong research skills, accurate reporting, clear and style-appropriate writing and other skills and conventions of print and digital media * Perform other job duties as required Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Master's degree in a related scientific field * 5 years of related scientific editorial experience * Must have a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
