Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for performing supervisory andadvanced inspection and service work in the environmental health fieldwith state or local health units. Work specialization in the areas ofvector control, water and wastewater, or food and drug sanitation willbe based upon assignment by supervisor. Exercises direct supervisionover assigned staff.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, perSAMHD Policy DM13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

  • 4:30 p.m., Monday

  • Friday; some weekends, nights, and holidays

Essential Job Functions

  • Reviews plans and specifications for food service establishments, water and on-site sewage disposal systems, and other facilities requiring public health approval.

  • Advises and makes recommendations concerning sewage and waste disposal

systems.

  • Submits reports and records of duties performed, including evaluations and recommendations for improvement of programs.

  • Recommends and promotes adequate improvement of environmental sanitation on public and private premises.

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned personnel.

  • Performs advanced inspections and service work, which involves frequently lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds.

  • Ensures that all departmental policies and regulations are carried out.

  • Promotes enforcement of state laws and local ordinances through skillful presentation of public health facts to the public.

  • Promotes understanding in gaining public support for adequate sanitation standards.

  • Interprets results of laboratory findings on samples submitted from food establishments, private and public water supplies, and sewage disposal plants, and recommends needed corrective measures.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university that includes at least thirty (30) semester hours in basic or applied science.

  • No substitution for education allowed.

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience as a Sanitarian.

  • Registration as a Professional Sanitarian in Texas.

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, additional background checks may be conducted.

  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

  • Knowledge of educational policies, disease control, and other health-related technical information.

  • Knowledge of biology and chemistry fundamentals.

  • Knowledge of the handling of hazardous materials.

  • Knowledge of related health principles and techniques.

  • Knowledge of proper procedures and methods for proper inspections.

  • Knowledge of work performance expectations.

  • Knowledge of resources and methods for training new staff and existing staff.

  • Knowledge of Federal regulations governing asbestos removal in order to point out items of non-compliance and required correction.

  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of various public health agencies.

  • Skill in utilizing basic office equipment.

  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

  • Ability to obtain, research, and organize pertinent health related information and data.

  • Ability to communicate with staff and take proper measures to ensure compliance.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.

  • Ability to ensure that City, health district, and division policies are being carried out.

  • Ability to Initiate and complete all types of personnel actions.

  • Ability to recognize current social and economic problems pertaining to public health.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to work with other agencies in resolving issues of public health significance.

  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Ability to work inside and outside with occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, dust, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and unfavorable fumes, vapors, and odors.
