We stand up to corporations that put profits before people, and advocate for a democracy that improves people's lives and protects our environment. We are seeking a senior climate and energy researcher — with a strong understanding of climate science, current and emerging energy trends, renewable energy technologies, and more — for our policy research team. The senior climate and energy researcher develops research products and written materials that support fast-paced organizing and advocacy campaigns that work on a host of issues. Most of the senior climate and energy researcher's work will support local, state and federal climate and energy campaigns, including those that seek to ban fracking, shut down power plants, pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure, and move off of fossil fuels and onto 100% renewable energy. However, the senior climate and energy researcher may also be expected to provide research support to our food, water, and sustainable agriculture policy issues, as needed. Specific Responsibilities: * In coordination with the research director, director of advocacy, climate and energy director, organizers, communications team and policy staff, develop thoroughly researched and persuasively written education materials such as reports, factsheets, web text, articles, and other materials on various issues. * Exercise independent judgment in executing assigned research projects, including identifying most appropriate sources and methodology to achieve organization's research goals. * Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver research projections from inception to publication in a timely manner. * Maintain knowledge of a diverse set of issues, research products, and current events related to our campaigns. * Review and circulate recent updates to scientific information related to our campaigns. * Respond to information requests from activists, coalition members, media, and others. * Assist in developing public testimony, professional presentations and other materials. * As needed, supervise interns and their research projects in support of our campaigns. * Effectively manage own projects and, as needed, other's projects. * Maintain accurate records to support citation requirements of work product. * Other duties as necessary and assigned. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, the person in this position has a high degree of contact with the research director and other researchers; a moderate degree of contact with other staff. * Experience: At least six years of experience with corporate and government research and writing at a public interest organization or similar publication. Experience working with databases and producing written material that relies heavily on statistics. * Education: College degree or equivalent experience required. Strong scientific background with a natural resources or environmental science-related degree preferred. * Knowledge: Familiarity with a range of consumer issues and knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process. Extensive knowledge of online, media, library, corporate, economic, government, NGO, industry, and academic research resources. Excellent written and oral communication and computer skills, including proficiency in Word and database programs. * Skills: Excellent investigative, research, written and oral communication skills, including proficiency in Word and Excel. Proven ability to create simple statistical models, conduct socioeconomic analyses and formulate defensible research methodologies. * Conditions: Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of Food & Water Watch. Travel possible. * Capabilities: In addition to a strong science and statistics background, the ideal candidate will also have a research, journalism or advocacy writing background that can be used to quickly and thoroughly carry out interviews and primary and secondary research, extract relevant information and then write about it persuasively and effectively. Ability to synthesize and understand information and translate it into a user friendly, easy-to-read, persuasive document.
