The Lerner lab is a leader at the intersection between the neuro and immune systems at epithelial surfaces. We use molecular and biochemical techniques as well as CRISPR to decipher the mechanisms that underlie sensation. Being a full-time member of our team will provide the opportunity to work in an environment on the cutting edge of biomedical research and to make impactful contributions in the field of cutaneous biology.

The employee will work independently to do experiments as jointly designed with other lab members and the PI. This position requires expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, tissue culture and mouse models.


Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures

  • Participates in the design and modification of research protocols

  • Develop research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives

  • Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts

  • Performs advanced data analysis using advanced statistical techniques

  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of lab activities, including quality assurance

  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of scheduling of all procedures

  • Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques

  • Perform fundamental laboratory skills (making solutions, bioassays, cell culture, flow cytometry, qPCR, and ELISA)

  • Execute primer design, molecular cloning, plasmid construction, qPCR

  • Application of CRISPR in vitro and in the generation of humanized mice

  • Perform protein analytical techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, Westerns, ELISA)


May supervise Laboratory assistants, technicians, and technologists.




  • Superb organizational, analytical, and communications skills

  • Experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell culture, flow cytometry, quantitative PCR, and other bioanalytical methods such as ELISA primer design, molecular cloning, plasmid construction, qPCR, protein analytical techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, Westerns, ELISA)

  • Works very independently under general direction of the Principal Investigator.

  • Ability to make independent and effective decisions

  • Ability to supervise/train staff effectively


Laboratory environment


  • B.S required

  • M.S. in a relevant scientific field (biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology) preferred


  • Requires 5 years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience

VIEW JOBS 10/11/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-09T00:00 GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Clinical Research Coordinator II for ongoing studies investigating the ability to accurately assess one's own memory performance changes in normal aging and brain disease, such as mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Assists professional staff in coordinating investigator-initiated studies and oversee various imaging and cognitive and meta-memory assessment protocols at MGH. Will recruit subjects for memory self-awareness, imaging, and other research projects. Will perform neuropsychological testing and collect neuroimaging data in normal aging and early Alzheimer's disease. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Scheduling appointments and assuring completion of visits. * Assisting in IRB submissions. * Providing daily oversight of other research assistants assigned duties within these studies. * Training and overseeing the operations of volunteer staff. * Managing scanner requests and collecting neuroimaging (MRI) data. * Administering cognitive testing and behavioral (including meta-memory) questionnaires. * Recruiting elderly participants (cognitively normal and impaired) for research studies by performing phone screens, and at off-site recruitment events. * Reviewing study details and obtaining informed consent from potential subjects. * Abstracting information from medical records and entering into a computerized database to help determine subject eligibility and maintain said database. * Assisting in the maintenance of research databases, including data entry, regular quality assurance checks, and preparation of specific data for analysis. * Processing and analyzing behavioral and multi-modality neuroimaging data, summarizing and presenting results. * Assisting PI with his/her analyses, as well as working on own analyses and publications. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: * Ability to work well independently, prioritizing work according to and within established study protocols * Excellent organizational skills to accomplish a variety of responsibilities and to establish and maintain efficient systems. * Excellent interpersonal skills to be able to interact with a variety of people in person and on the telephone. Must be able to relate well with subjects, physicians, technologists and administrators. * Ability to work under pressure and within deadlines; the clinical research setting is a very busy and demanding environment. * Ability to oversee the work of and provide guidance to students and volunteers. * Computer literacy including familiarity with word processing and Microsoft excel. EDUCATION: B.A/B.S. with background in pre-med, psychology, neuroscience or related field required. EXPERIENCE: * At least 1 year of related experience in a research setting with experience interacting with human research participants required. * Knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with medical records systems. WORKING CONDITIONS: * Office and clinic environment. * Must be able to travel between hospital and research buildings carrying study documents and materials.
