The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (https://nres.illinois.edu) is seeking qualified applicants for a position as a Senior Research Specialist in Fort Cavazos, Texas.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct monitoring and research in support of the efforts at Fort Cavazos, including monitoring of pollinators, pest insects, and migratory birds.

  • Data curating and analysis associated with the different projects, including the use of multi-variate statistics, and using program R.

  • Writing annual scientific reports and submitting permits.

  • Hiring technicians and approving timesheets.

  • Developing yearly budgets and purchasing supplies.

  • Vehicle management (making sure the fleet is operational).

  • Collaborating with other researchers as well as Army personnel.

  • Maintenance of the MOTUS tower to investigate the movement of birds and other taxa on the installation, and analysis of these data using program R or other coding languages.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in ecology or an equivalent degree.

  • 2 years of experience monitoring biodiversity on an Army installation.

  • Ability to identify birds that commonly occur on Fort Cavazos by sight and sound.

  • Knowledge of the plant and pollinator community in central Texas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good writing and communication skills.

  • Experience producing reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of activities on army installations.

  • Ability to curate data in MS Excel.

  • Ability to analyze data in program R.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to multitask (managing multiple projects at the same time).

  • Knowledge of feral hog control.

  • Knowledge of the limiting factor of pollinators.

  • Knowledge of the life history of birds in central Texas.

  • Knowledge of the common pest management issues in central Texas.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible on or after August 16th, 2024. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for the position is $58,000 to $65,000.
