Department Summary

UCLA LPPI addresses the most critical domestic policy challenges facing Latinos and other communities of color through research, advocacy, mobilization, and leadership development to propel policy reforms that expand genuine opportunity for all Americans. Within LPPI, the research department is a dynamic team of multi-issue researchers that utilize a broad set of methodology to inform policy at various geographic levels.

Position Summary

The UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute (LPPI) seeks dynamic research professional to serve as senior research analyst across multiple projects with a focus on housing and wealth. Under the direction of the Directors of Research, the senior research analyst(s) will serve as integral members of a fast-paced research department.

Analysts will be responsible for supporting the development, management, and execution of LPPI's research portfolios, including LPPI's growing research on Latino housing and wealth. Substantive activities include collection, standardization, and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data that result in rigorous research products that inform policy audiences. Research analysts are responsible for project management which includes drafting and implementing project work plans, managing the research activities of project personnel, and coordinating project deliverables.

Other duties include managing report production, developing training curricula for public audiences, designing interactive data visualizations, and drafting public writings to translate findings for broad audiences, including opinion and editorial pieces. The research analyst will also provide administrative support to the Directors of Research, who oversee a robust applied research agenda, including in-house research projects, extramural research projects, faculty-driven research, student research training and supervision, and university-level course development. This position requires fundraising to sustain the projects attached to this portfolio.

Senior research analysts will identify funding opportunities from government agencies, private foundations, other sources aligned with our research priorities, and will write compelling grant proposals and applications tailored to specific funding opportunities. Finally, this position will require the identification and maintenance of important relationships with scholars, practitioners, journalists, and funders to promote the organization's goals and activities.

Salary & Compensation

  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to plan and execute a wide range of data collection activities including planning for and implementing field work/site visits, focus groups, interviews, and surveys. (Required) Demonstrated working knowledge of social science research, including technical knowledge, excellent verbal/writing skills, and the ability to communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences. (Required) Interpersonal skills and ability to maintain cooperative relationships and ongoing communications with persons of diverse social, educational, and cultural backgrounds. (Required) Ability to plan and manage the production of several publications and various communications projects from first draft to camera-ready copy, including design, methodology, data collection, analysis, peer review, and publication. (Required) Demonstrated ability to efficiently operate computers and utilize quantitative statistical software (e.g. Stata, R, SAS, Matlab). (Required) Working knowledge of web-based collaboration and project management tools i.e. Google Apps,Doodle, Monday.com, and data visualization software(e.g., Tableau, Datawrapper, of GIS); experience translating data findings into web tools and interactive visualizations. Advanced knowledge of PC/Mac program (Required) Strong interpersonal skills to maintain professional, effective working relationships with academic leaders; university administrators, faculty, staff, students; LPPI board members and volunteers; campus donors and prospects project funders and their representatives; and the general public. (Required) Ability to take direction and work independently with minimal direction, making independent decisions, establishing priorities, and following through on assignments. (Required) Ability to conduct periodic projects evaluation and review for quality control and strategic planning purposes. Highly organized with strong skills in using project management tools to compile information in the most efficient and informative, manage project tasks, and track progress and information (Required) Demonstrated exceptional abilities at statistical analysis, writing, reporting and copy editing. This includes the ability to write concise, logical, grammatically correct documents and materials for academic and public consumption. (Required) Working knowledge of social media platforms and social media management systems, especially Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn Demonstrated ability to conceptualize communications in a strategic way to promote organizational goals. Working knowledge of Adobe Suite. (Preferred) Substantive knowledge of the design and implementation of ETL pipelines, relational databases, and data warehouses. Experience with cloud computing and Big Data frameworks a plus. Demonstrated ability to extract data, merge different data sets, read and review syntax for large data sets. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in good academic standing from an accredited college or university and / or equivalent experience / training. (Required) Master's Degree In a social science field, such as public policy, public health, sociology, urban planning, economics, or data science-related field. (Preferred)
