Senior Recreation Leaders to work in our summer programs for youth, teens, and families.

Under limited supervision, the Senior Recreation Leaderassiststhe Recreation Coordinator in planning, organizing, supervising, and leading recreational activities and other related work asrequired. Senior Recreation Leaders plan and lead activities for youth, teens, and families in a variety of Recreation services. The Senior Recreation Leader is assigned to the Cupertino Parks and Recreation department andrepresentsthe

Citybefore thegeneral public. This position emphasizes leadership, mentoring, and customer service. Job duties will vary depending onprogramareas assigned to.

Class Characteristics

This classification differs from that of Recreation Leader which is an entry level position. Senior Recreation Leadersare responsible formentoring and supervising volunteers. Senior Recreation Leaders mustdemonstratethe ability to perform the work of the higher-level class and have the knowledge, skills, and experience which meet the qualifications.

This is a part-time, at-will, and non-benefited position limited to no more than995 hoursper fiscal year.

Important Dates:

Mandatory Training June10 - 14. This isa paidtraining.

Mandatory workday July 4.

Summer programs begin June17- August09.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direct or general direction from the Recreation Coordinatorand Staff Assistants.Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

  • Engagesyouth or teens in a variety of positive, fun, and age-appropriate activities. Typical activities include, but are not limitedto:arts, crafts, sports, games, trips, contests, and special events.

  • Supervisesprogram participants.

  • Assistswith leading activities, programs, and events.

  • Maintainsa positive and safe work environment.

  • Encouragesparticipation andfacilitatesactivities.

  • Supportsfellow Recreation Leaders and

SeniorRecreationLeaders andparticipatesin maintenance offacilityand equipment.

  • Assistwithsupervising volunteersandensuresthat the assigned programs meet the needs and interests of the participants.

  • Attend staff meetings and respect departmental policies and procedures.

  • Answer questions and field complaints from customers and refer them toappropriate staff.

  • Performs other duties asrequired.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Youthandteen games, science experiments, sports, crafts, and other interactive activities.

  • Safety precautions as they relate to youth and teens.

  • Experience working with special needs youth and teens is highly desirable.

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Manage time effectively, show initiative, and work independently.

  • Establish andmaintaineffective working relationships with teammates, parents, volunteers, and other members of the community.

  • Learn policies and procedures applicable to the operation of the City.

  • Work with a diverse population in a tactful and effective manner.

  • Work and communicate effectively in a team setting.

  • Transport self to and from work.

Education and Experience

  • 500 hoursof relevant work experiencerequired. One year of related college coursesdesired. Examples of relevant work experience include recreation camps, youth/teen programs, daycare settings, or afterschool programs.

  • Customer service experience is a plus.

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years old by June10, 2024.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Current CPR and First Aid certificationdesirable(CPR and First Aid certification and re-certification will be offered to new employees).

Supplemental Information

Mandatory Training June10 - 14. This isa paidtraining.

Summer programs begin June17- August09.

Various Program and Various Program Hours

Preschool Adventures Summer Program:

Monday through Thursday 8:45 am

  • 12:15 pm at Quinlan Community Center.

Additionalhours as needed.

AdventureCamp Summer Program:

Monday through Friday8:45am

  • 5:15 pm at Memorial Park.

Work schedules can be flexible.Additionalhours as needed.

Physical Demands

Must be able to stand, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel, jump, run, twist and reach, and lift and carry weight of 25 pounds or less while coordinating and or/ supervising recreation activities.
