About the role

Steer North America is looking for an experienced, motivated, self-starting, problem-solver and collaborative professional to fill our Senior Rail Advisor position. This person will be working in our rail market supporting our clients with consultation, which has contributed to our company’s ongoing success in the United States, Canada, and beyond.

This person will be a contributing member of Steer’s North American/International teams which is comprised of planners, engineers, economists, designers, financial modellers and technical specialists.

Our rail team brings together a mix of international experts from both the private and public sectors. We combine our understanding of people, context and function to deliver innovative solutions which helps to make our cities, transport systems and public places understandable, accessible and enjoyable for all.

As a global leader in providing technical advice on rail transportation projects, we are looking for a significantly experienced individual to expand our North America market presence. Successful candidates will spearhead business development activities across North America (especially in the US) and lead teams providing professional services to senior-level private and public clients. We are interested in candidates with technical experience, client connections, and market intelligence.

The Senior Rail Advisor will:

  • Work alongside colleagues to conceptualize, develop, and deliver on new and preexisting client projects
  • Support to State DOTs and other entities seeking to develop passenger rail services, notably including applications for Federal funding, such as through the FRA’s Corridor Identification and Development (CID) Program.
  • Provide commercial and technical leadership on rail transportation projects, potentially including providing advice on rail ridership and revenue, business case analysis, strategic infrastructure planning, rail operations and operation cost analysis, economic impacts, and/or rail-related data analytics.
  • Manage work conducted by other team members to budget and quality expectations
  • Support Steer’s Rail practice via development and sponsorship of major rail transportation projects and programs
  • Mentor and manage the development of early career professionals

The Senior Rail Advisor will work in a demanding and enjoyable environment across projects and provide wider support to our business in the design and implementation of commercial transactions (including P3), ridership forecasting, strategic planning, operational evaluation, performance, station planning, business cases, strategic rail engineering and rolling stock procurement for a wide range of Steer’s projects and clients.

  • Grow our Advisory practice through revenue generation and expanding the breadth of our clients in the rail sector.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the business to continually develop and evolve high-quality and differentiated services to our clients.
  • Work closely with senior-level colleagues to deliver against company financial and behavioral targets.
  • Lead teams in delivering successful proposals and projects to time, cost, risk management, and product quality
  • Be able to lead a diverse team of consultants, including being the primary point-of-contact for our clients, and successfully delivering both written and oral presentations/reports to senior clients.

Work Environment

All Steer employees seeking a full-time opportunity are encouraged to spend 60% of their time either in office or on-site with clients. An employee’s typical work week consists of 40 hours. Hours, expectations, and exemption status will be adjusted for any applicant seeking a part-time opportunity.

Compensation

The salary range for all US applicants are $175,000 to $220,000 USD.

Do be advised that this is an estimated benchmark salary of good faith for the States of New York, Washington, Colorado and California. All compensation, regardless of location, may be subject to change as skills, abilities, internal equity and geographic location are taken into account.

In addition to base salary, all employees will be eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus. Please review the benefits section for more information on total reward.

Steer reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional compensation.

Requirements

The preferred candidate for this role will possess some or all of the following attributes:

  • 15+ years of relevant experience with specific capabilities and client relationships within the rail market in the US
  • Held senior positions in the trail sector, through consultancy, infrastructure advisory, and/or public sector.
  • A thorough understanding of the American rail industry with a track record of delivering work for private operators/investors, railroads, transit agencies and/or public transportation authorities.
  • A developed network of client contacts and track record of developing winning proposals.
  • Proactivity in identifying client needs and cultivating relationships to develop business.
  • Thorough understanding of the commercial considerations of bidding and market risk.
  • A successful track-record of managing/leading transportation projects, in particular those in the rail sector.
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of projects including teams comprising multiple capabilities.
  • Ability to set technical direction and review or challenge analytical approaches/outputs.
  • Excellent technical skills related to data analytics or technical analysis in the rail sector.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, both internally and externally.
  • An interest in providing professional development or mentorship to colleagues.
  • The ability to work autonomously yet in collaboration with other colleagues and our clients
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in transportation or civil engineering
  • An ability to delegate, learn quickly and find enjoyment through the development of new skills
  • Detail-oriented; able to multi-task and effectively prioritize workloads and meet strict deadlines
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
  • Additional skills of merit include:

  • Have previous experience assessing and shaping complex projects through working as a consultant or on the public-sector side.
  • Post-graduate qualification in transportation or civil engineering
