Overview

PRIMARY FUNCTION:Works onsite with the Next-Generation Surface Search Radar (NGSSR) Prime Contractor in Chantilly, VA to assist the OEM with Radar Frequency (RF) design choices and tradeoffs to meet Navy requirements for performance, reliability and maintainability. The candidate will also provide guidance to the OEM in preparing for manufacturing the radar and preparing for Navy design reviews.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Support engineering efforts related to development, testing and analysis of Radar design and development.

Perform design review of proposed engineering changes with a focus on reliability and maintainability Develop and review existing and new software requirements definitions. Review and evaluate performance specifications and technical design review proposed design improvements, waivers, deviations and alterations. Develop and maintain software life-cycle management and maintenance documentation.

Analyze operational software systems under procurement and in service to ensure conformance with system requirements specifications, provide corrections and/or improvements that translate into detailed change proposals. Generate, analyze, evaluate, and implement Software Trouble Reports (STRs) and change proposals. Develop/update source code (for both software and firmware) and documentation to correct STRs and ECPs approved for implementation in accordance with the requirements of standards for all assigned systems.

Generate software and systems test specifications and procedures. Support verification and validation testing of new program builds for assigned systems and support. Provide configuration management support by maintaining configuration management databases.

Perform data entry functions for maintaining system configuration databases. Monitor system production (both initial and modifications); analyze and recommend action on manufacturing and production problems, review impact of production engineering changes, waivers and deviations on procurement. Provide services for the programming and delivery or tactical computer programs in electronic media and of programmable read only memory (PROM) devices.

Provide oversight of design, fabrication, and acceptance testing for the customer in the design and production plant. Effectively participate in IPDR and ICDR package reviews on site to ensure that the Navy's needs are met.

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with the setup of radar systems.

Practical experience with Air Defense/Surveillance Radar (AD/SR), Air Traffic Control (ATC) Radar or Ground Weapons Locating Radar (GWLR) operations. Practical experience with preventative maintenance processes. Experience with deployment and setup of ground-based mobile radar systems.

Experience with electrical safety procedures, hazardous material handling and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills. Personal computer skills (competent with MS Office applications). Ten (10) years' minimum relevant work experience required. Four (4) years' experience engineering involving surveillance radars preferred.

Education: MS in Engineering, Computer Science, Math or Physics or BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Math or Physics w/12 years' experience

Clearance Level: Secret

Looking for an experienced Radar Exploitation Scientist to join our growing advanced RF sensing team at either our headquarters in Northridge, California or in our Virginia (Chantilly and Arlington) offices. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, technically talented and intellectually agile individual able to support a broad range of radar programs and intiatives across the company. The Radar Exploitation Scientist will conduct research and development activities focused on passive and active RF sensor technology exploitation that address the challenging mission requirements and emerging needs of our IC and DoD customers, both for existing systems and systems under development. Activities cover algorithm development and concept design for ground-based, shipboard, airborne, and space-based RF systems. Technical challenges cover a broad range of disciplines including novel waveforms that enable multiple missions, simulation and performance modeling, and optimal processing approaches. The successful candidate will be a key player in developing radar solutions critical to national security. SUMMARY: Researches, designs, develops and verifies signal and image collection systems, and defines and develops processing and dissemination computer algorithms. Develops requirements analysis, system architecture, and integrates new signal and image capture and processing technology systems. Designs, develops and analyzes systems for the extraction of information from sensors. Systems utilization includes implementation of signal and image processing with advanced computer architectures. Primary responsibilities: * The Radar Exploitation Scientist will support Areté Research & Development efforts in Advanced Radio Frequency (RF) Sensing through: * Developing novel solutions, significant enhancements and efficient implementations of signal processing algorithms for challenging mission applications, with initial focus on SAR systems * Researching, designing, and implementing advanced signal processing and RF system concepts that yield new capabilities addressing urgent customer needs * Implementing prototype solutions in software, utilizing the latest data exploitation techniques (including machine learning techniques) * Developing simulations and performance models that enable trade studies for radar systems * Technically supporting radar initiatives in multiple Business Areas across the company * Interfacing with and briefing technical solutions to customers and large peer groups * Traveling as necessary to support customer requirements Required Qualifications & Experience: Bachelor's degree or higher in Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering or related technical discipline, with no less than 4 years relevant radar experience. 9+ years of experience in industry with BS/BA - 7+ years of experience in industry with MS/MA - 4+ years of experience in industry with PhD * Demonstrated analytical, applied mathematics and problem-solving skills. * Radar systems development experience including: signal and image processing, detection/estimation theory, algorithm development, software development, data analysis and modeling and simulation * Programming proficiency sufficient to generate prototype solutions (e.g. IDL, C/C++, MATLAB or Python) * Excellent technical writing and oral communications skills * Must be a U.S. Citizen with an active Top Secret/SCI clearance Preferred Qualifications & Experience: * Experience with SAR image formation, algorithms and exploitation concepts * Experience developing novel waveforms and associated signal processing algorithms * Experience with automatic target recognition technologies * Experience with modern machine learning techniques applied to sensor data exploitation * Familiarity with embedded processing (e.g. FPGA or CPU/GPU implementations) * Familiarity with formal software development processes and cloud computing paradigms * Experience supporting business capture activities * Experience overseeing junior researchers/developers Areté Associates offers an excellent compensation and a full benefits package.
