The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues.

The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor (SPHNS):

The incumbent certifies clients. Identifies nutrition risks based on the assessment of the nutrition questionnaire, health data and health history.

Provides and documents client centered nutrition education, goal(s) and refers to other services. Focuses on meeting the needs of medically high-risk clients. A valid and current Florida License to practice dietetics is required for this position.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Certifies clients. Identifies nutrition risks based on the assessment of the nutrition questionnaire, health data and health history.

Provides and documents client centered nutrition education, goal(s) and refers to other services. Assigns food packages based on nutrition assessment and program criteria. Focuses on meeting the needs of medically high risk clients following the Women, Infants and Children Procedure Manual, Nutrition Care Manual and the Women, Infants and Children Competent Professional Authority Guidebook.

Collects anthropometric data by conducting height/stature and weight measurements. Performs fingers sticks to assess hemoglobin levels of Women, Infants and Children participants. Verifies, educates and documents immunization status according to policy. Issues eligible benefits to participants when appropriate.

Provides breastfeeding education, support and referrals.

Ensures proper clinic operations.

Performs monthly audits of Women, Infants and Children records using the Quality Assurance tool. Review and monitor high risk report monthly. Performs and monitors formula inventory; conducts monthly formula inventory audit.

Completes and submits time in Employee Activity Record System, travel, timesheets, assignments and reports in accordance with established agency and division guidelines. Email communication must be maintained on a daily basis.

Communicates with courtesy, respect, and understanding when dealing with clients, the public and staff. Attends staff meetings, trainings and meetings as required. Adheres to assigned work duties as designated by supervisor and performs other related tasks as necessary.

If fluent in another language, may be required to assist with translation to ensure quality client services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

• Knowledge of local, state, and federal Women, Infants and Children Program policies and procedures.

• Knowledge of current science and practice of food, nutrition and dietetics; normal nutrition principles and dietary needs throughout the life cycle.

• Ability to assess appropriate and effective feeding for women, infants and children.

• Effectively counsel using the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) techniques.

• Knowledge of medical terminology.

• Ability to use computer, digital scale, balance scale, stature board, Hemocue machine, copier, telephone.

• Computer skills: thorough knowledge, skills and ability to use Excel, Word, Outlook, FL-WiSE.

• Excellent customer service skills, maintains client confidentiality and effective working relationships.

• Ability to lift and transfer all supplies required to perform job duties.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

• Licensure, degree, certification, or registration requirements: Bachelor of Science degree or master's degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Home Economics with emphasis in Nutrition per WIC Federal Regulation, CFR, Title 7, Part 246. This occupation requires that the incumbents meet the requirements outlined in Chapter 468, Part X, Florida Statutes, or be eligible to practice dietetics in accordance with Chapter 64B8-40 to 45, Florida Administrative Code.

• Valid State of Florida License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist issued by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance

• Valid Florida Drivers' License Required is required to obtain reimbursement for travel according to policy.

Preferred:

• Fluent reading, writing, and speaking both English and Spanish or English and Haitian Creole

• Prior/current experience with WIC
