The Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of

SENIOR PUBLIC HEALTH MICROBIOLOGIST

Interviews and job offers for selected candidates will take place beginning the week of June 24, 2024.

This position is eligible for appointment at step 5, $102,918.40 annually.

Future Salary Increases

July 2024 - 3.33% increase to base pay (2.75% Across-the-Board + 0.58% Market Increase)

May be eligible for relocation allowance up to $8,000

The Health and Human Services Agency's Public Health Services, which has one of the largest and most complex public health laboratories in California, is seeking a mission-driven candidate who wants to make a difference in community health. The Public Health Laboratory provides quality laboratory services to protect community health and prevent the spread of disease. This lab performs a wide variety of testing, such as rabies, enteric diseases, molecular diagnostic assays and beach and bay bacteriological levels.

The Public Health Laboratory serves TB and STD public health clinics, community epidemiology, local hospitals and health care providers, county agencies including Juvenile and Adult Detention, Department of Environmental Health, and the Department of Animal Services.

The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for a Senior Public Health Microbiologist. This is the lead level class in the Public Health Microbiologist series. Senior Public Health Microbiologists act as a CLIA General Supervisor, provide technical guidance, direction and training to lower-level microbiologists and laboratory staff, and are responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the laboratory section in which they are assigned.

HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins June 24, 2024. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.

  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Current certification as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services; OR,a certificate from the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services indicating that the applicant has passed the state Public Health Microbiologist certification examination; AND,
  • One (1) year of experience performing highly complex microbiology or immunology tests in a public health laboratory or in a laboratory that is certified by or exempt from the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1992.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

EVALUATION PROCESS
