We are currently looking for a Senior Property Accountant to join Baker Tilly Advantage in Chicago, Illinois! The main responsibility of the Senior Property Accountant is to provide accounting services to our real estate clients by providing accurate, timely and useful financial information to them. This role assists the Controller by preparing financial statements, tracking information pertaining to our clients' key performance indicators and providing advice and insights to our clients.

Client Deliverables and Advisory

  • Help lead best-in-class customer service to clients and employees at all times, with an emphasis on being proactive, responsive, timely, professional, and accurate

  • Provide accounting services pertaining to general accounting and financial reporting. This includes tasks such as ensuring the accuracy of account balances, performing account reconciliations, preparing journal entries and financial statements

  • Identify accounting, financial statement, and reporting issues, based on professional guidelines

  • Review staff work on client deliverables for completeness and timeliness, as well as ensuring appropriate corrections are made prior to sending to Controller for final review

  • Work with Controller to act as a business advisor to clients by providing valuable insights, monitoring key benchmarks, and offering advice on future planning

  • Assist with managing and building client relationships by acting as liaison to address and resolve client issues, communicating effectively with the client to provide superior client service, and assisting Controller and/or Relationship Manager (RM) in researching and providing additional advisory services to client

Team & Individual Development

  • Assist with the supervision and development of team members as appropriate, to include providing regular and timely review and feedback on staff work

  • Assist with planning and directing projects by communicating interactively and proactively with engagement team members and delegating work as appropriate


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field preferred. Experience in lieu of a degree may be accepted

  • Three (3) plus years of progressively responsible experience in professional accounting functions

  • Experience in real estate property accounting

  • Experience using Yardi Voyager and/or MRI

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles related to classifying, recording, and summarizing data and making computations to compile financial records

  • CPA preferred, but not required

  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

  • Ability to provide exceptional client service with a high professional demeanor and ability to handle matters confidentially

  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, rapidly changing, deadline driven environment serving multiple clients

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to effectively communicate with all levels including clients, team members and team leadership

  • Strong attention to detail and focus on accuracy

  • Excellent organization and time management skills

VIEW JOBS 10/11/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-09T00:00 ELS is looking for a Senior Property Accountant in our Chicago Home Office to support and oversee a team of accountants working on the financial statements close process within a portfolio of properties. You will have a large impact on process improvement and implementation within the department. You will have significant interaction with operations, including property managers, and FP&A. If you are a hands-on professional with a strong understanding of the application of GAAP, you will be successful in this role. A control and process-oriented mindset, strong analytical and problem solving skills, and desire and ability to identify, recommend and lead improvements are essential skills that you possess. In this role, you will have high visibility to the C-Suite and potential to grow within ELS. What will you be doing? * Oversee the timely completion of the monthly accounting close for a portfolio of properties. * Review and oversee the accuracy of the monthly financial statements for a portfolio of properties. * Prepare monthly income statement analysis comparing actual to budget/forecast and prior year, including robust explanations for variances and present results to management. * You review balance sheet account reconciliations, including complex cash accounts. * Prepare quarterly/annual schedules to support financial statements used for public reporting. * You also provide assistance to external auditors during quarterly review and annual audit process. * Manage day-to-day activities of Property Accountants to ensure all assigned activities are completed timely and accurately. * Propose recommendations for changes and improvements to accounting policies/procedures. * You continually evaluate system processes across the organization and lead projects to streamline and improve monthly close process, including software implementation/software integration projects. * You ensure support to key customers, including operations and FP&A as needed. Your qualifications include: * Bachelor's degree in Accounting. If you are a CPA, this is preferred. * You have at least 4 years of accounting experience; If you have real estate/property accounting experience, this is a plus. * Strong analytical skills and working knowledge of US GAAP. * You are able to handle multiple projects and deadlines. * Detail oriented with excellent organization skills: accuracy is essential. * Your verbal and written communication skills are superb. * You are nimble with computer systems and have experience with Microsoft Suite.
