The New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) is an integral component of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The experiment station provides a diverse range of research, extension, and education programs that serve the people of New Jersey and the urban, suburban, and rural communities in which they live. Through its Cooperative Extension offices in all 21 New Jersey counties, dedicated 4-H agents, Extension specialists, Family & Community Health Sciences educators, and Agriculture and Natural Resources agents work to serve New Jersey residents in every area of the state.

As the health and wellness component of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the Department of Family & Community Health Sciences (FCHS) promotes healthy lifestyles and environments for NJ residents and communities with outreach in food, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles. Recognized nationally for its work, FCHS connects Rutgers University and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station to communities beyond the campus to build healthy families, schools, and communities. Based locally, in each county, FCHS supports efforts to meet the health and wellness challenges facing communities throughout the state through engaged civic learning, volunteerism, service, community-based research, education, and integrated efforts and partnerships.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Senior Program Administrator (Rutgers Against Hunger) for the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES). The position requires someone who is collaborative, organized, adept at networking, and effective in program delivery.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Leads the Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH) and affiliated efforts within the New Brunswick Community Farmers Markets (NBCFM), and Cook's Market Farmers Market (CMFM) which provides high quality, affordable produce to the community, promotes better nutrition, and serves as an interface between Rutgers and its surrounding neighbors.

  • Develops, refines, and executes a business plan designed to ensure the RAH Farmers Markets continued sustainability, including the development and management of appropriate infrastructure, processes, accountability measures, evaluations of program effectiveness, and the identification and successful pursuit of additional program resources.

  • Organizes and manages appropriate efforts to advertise and promote the RAH Farmers Markets and their associated activities.

  • Key to this position will be to engage with various public and private institutions, agencies and community organizations to determine and implement special program requirements, modifications, and innovations designed to meet the needs of the local community, the farmer markets vendors, Rutgers University, and the City of New Brunswick.

  • Works with State, county, and municipal authorities to ensure that all necessary permits and regulatory approvals are current and valid and that the farmers markets will meet all State and Federal requirements to accept payments or vouchers from the SNAP, WIC, SFMNP, and other food assistance programs.

  • Engages, and where appropriate coordinates activities with other public and private institutions, agencies, and community organizations whose missions include addressing issues of hunger and food insecurity.

  • Engages other State, County, and Community agencies and programs focused on evaluating and improving the local and regional food system.

  • Where appropriate, the position will contribute to presentations and publications - both scholarly and for lay audiences - in order to advance knowledge about this and related programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a Bachelors's degree in nutrition, environmental science, public health or other related field and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, understanding, and skills required to organize and manage a successful farmers market and community gardening programs.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience is also required.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Personal car and valid NJ driver's license for the ability to drive to sites off campus.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires the ability to work independently and to multi-task.

  • Strong time management skills are required, as are excellent interpersonal skills and communication abilities.

  • Sufficient understanding of the scientific aspects of the field as well as the requisite educational experience to effectively and accurately convey concepts to participants in a manner that promotes behavior change.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree or equivalent experience

  • Ability to speak and write in English and Spanish.

  • Experience developing/managing education curriculum; experience collecting participant research data using online survey software; experience conducting qualitative research (i.e., cognitive testing, interviewing, focus group, content analysis), quantitative research (i.e., survey), and systematic literature reviews; experience in developing and conducting community-based programming delivered online and in-person; experience delivering research findings in peer-reviewed venues (e.g., professional meetings, journal articles), excellent written and oral communication skills; high level of computer literacy; and excellent organizational skills.

  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.

Equipment Utilized

  • Data analysis software; Qualtrics software; Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to carry 40 pounds.

  • The 'regular' workweek will routinely include evening and/or weekend work.
