The Senior Product Owner acts as the voice of the business and voice of the customer for a component of the customer journey, representing and driving business needs across multiple delivery teams (squads) to ensure business and end-user satisfaction.
This role contributes to the realization of Value Stream strategy, vision, and OKRs by aligning and prioritizing business goals with actionable results. This role may have one or more VS Product Owner(s) reporting into this role, responsible for coaching and career development.
In this role, you will:
Bring a strategic view to manage tactical delivery of products or product components, aligned to the value stream and segment priorities
Drive the strategy, planning, prioritization decisions and delivery of key capabilities aligned to the Value Stream customer journey, including features
Collaborate closely with business stakeholders to achieve business priorities & initiatives
The VS Senior Product Owner's primary responsibilities can be divided into three categories and may cross multiple squads. This may have direct reports and provide management and career development for one or more VS Product Owner(s).
Voice of the Business, Customer, and End-User (in context of direction from the Experience Strategist)
Be responsible for business outcomes in alignment with segment/global priorities for assigned area of the value stream(s)
Act as the voice of the business and voice of the customer within the squad(s) to ensure business and end-user satisfaction
Drive prioritization decisions, in partnership with the business, to enable team to deliver business outcomes
Maintain a firm understanding of business, customer, and end-user pain points, needs, and preferences
Maintain a firm understanding of relevant personas and customer journeys in order to advocate for the ideal experience
Monitor industry, competitive and general business trends to enable strategic planning and delivery of outcomes in alignment with segment priorities
Work as the "customer proxy" and consistently applies to customer lens to solutions
Ensure the voice of the customer/stakeholder is prominent and accurate in the definition of user stories
Drive the strategy, planning and delivery of key capabilities aligned to the
Value Stream customer journey, including features
Translate of objectives and strategy to the team for tactical delivery
Primarily lead the squad(s) in ensuring value creation for the business, customers, and end-users by owning the squad backlog and ensuring that the highest value work is always being executed
Work with squad(s) to define hypotheses, run experiments (surveys, concept testing, analytics tools, A/B testing), and analyze data to make decisions on user stories that influence the direction of delivery
Build and groom the user story backlog for one or more squads (prioritizing based on value)
Ensure the backlog is visible, clear and understood by all squad members
Incorporate feedback from stakeholder demos, interviews, user research, and engineering into the squad backlog
Accept the work outputs (i.e. completed user stories) of the squad by ensuring all stories meet the definition of done
Squad Alignment & Communication
Provide strategic team leadership in managing delivery of business outcome-focused work
Bring coaching mindset to agile practices and product content knowledge
Specify and effectively communicate desired outcomes for current and future capabilities
Lead or assist in demonstrations of the squad's outputs (i.e. working software)
Review and contribute to the value stream roadmap
Draft the squad's specific objectives and key results (OKRs) in alignment with those of the value stream
Key Shared Accountabilities:
Share accountability with Value Stream Owner, Experience Strategist, and all Product Management roles for addressing customer needs, validating solutions, and improving user experiences
Collaborate with VSLT, HCD, and Product Management to continually uncover pain points and opportunities in order to ensure the continuous delivery of the highest value outcomes
Shared accountability with Scrum Master for delivery of measurable business value
Shared accountability with Scrum Master and Delivery Lead to define and continually improve the work intake and prioritization process within the value stream squads
Shared accountability with Scrum Master for alignment on release strategy and release content with pertinent stakeholders
In instances where there is no Scrum Master, the VS Senior Product Owner may assume and/or share certain responsibilities normally associated with the Scrum Master. These responsibilities may be shared or owned on a rotational basis with other members of the squad.
Team management with VS Product Owners(s) as direct report(s), as appropriate
Understand flow of work from intake to release with an eye toward optimizing squad work in progress, clearly communicating priorities for upcoming work, and maintaining alignment to value stream level OKRs
Solid coaching mindset and abilities, enabling team members in defining solutions, and delivering to outcomes
Engagement of squad members to collaborate, promote ownership and accountability of tasks, and maintain continuous improvement mindset
Stakeholder management and communication skills in defining outcomes, communicating progress, and facilitating planning meetings
Strong level of knowledge and understanding of area of practice
Strong knowledge of the business, with previous, active role as a Product Owner/Manager strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of digital enterprise enablement technologies and practices
Minimum of 4+ years of experience in a business role
