Independently performs a variety of assignments requiring the application of standard design engineering techniques involving the conceptual planning, detailed design and layout, and equipment selection for various processes or systems of a type. This requires the application of standard design and engineering techniques, procedures, and know-how where the definition of scope may range from heat and material balances to P&IDs and well-defined specifications and layouts.

The system or process may be of a chemical nature or a mechanical system, or a control system for a material handling operation. The incumbent must be capable of exercising independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to make minor design adaptations and modifications. It is frequently the case that the element of design the Process Engineer is involved with is critical to the total success of the whole project.

Good judgment and adequate experience are, therefore, essential qualities, backed by a sound academic background appropriate to the particular process. Assignments have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.

• 4-year mechanical or chemical engineering degree and typically 10 - 15 years' related experience as a process engineer (or equivalent working knowledge/experience).

• Professional Registration is required.

• Considerable experience in utilizing various computer software packages such as AutoCAD ChemCad, process design software piping design software, process estimating software, and other automated engineering and design equipment.
