Senior Process Engineer

  • Provides technical expertise, guidance, and leadership in laboratory testing and equipment sizing for sedimentation and filtration processes. Expected to assist with testing, training, development, and analyses of designs, processes, or procedures.

  • Acts as a technical advisor for a variety of solid/liquid separation equipment so that technical process issues are handled correctly and efficiently in line with customer requirements and objectives.

  • Prepares, performs, and reports on laboratory and pilot scale testing programs to determine optimum equipment type, sizing, and operating parameters.

  • Carries out process audits, plant visits, customer meetings, and supports commissioning efforts.

  • Read and interpret process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, arrangement drawings, and specifications.

  • Manages multiple projects in a team environment while providing oversight to junior engineers.

  • Presents and publish technical papers and articles.

Skills and Knowledge

  • BS Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, or related degree.

  • Ten (10) years of related mining or chemical experience with solid/liquid separation experience preferred.

  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and written. Second language preferred.

  • Must be able to work in the US.

This team is responsible to enable industry leading performance, to identify threats and opportunities for safe and efficient delivery of cathode/byproducts and to ensure the right focus for optimization across the full value stream. Reporting to the Manager – Technical, Metals you will: * Lead a team of Process Engineers providing day to day technical support to the Hot Metals Area (Material Handling, Flash Smelting Furnace, Flash Converting Furnace, Anode Refining, and Casting). * Interface with Technical, Operations, Asset Management, Integration, and Environmental teams to ensure peak safety, environmental, and production performance in the Hot Metals Area. * Be the primary technical contact for all day to day Hot Metals technical support needs. This includes: * Safety * Process Control * Process Monitoring * Feed Planning * Troubleshooting * Environmental Compliance * Asset Integrity * Provide 24/7 technical support with Hot Metals Technical Team via scheduled on-site support for day shift and on-call support for night shift. * Manage training and development for direct reports. * Participate in value stream planning decisions. * Be aware of current conditions in the rest of the value stream that will affect Hot Metals and the effect that Hot Metals has on downstream operations. * Support Metals Technical Team leaders on specific initiatives in their work areas. * Collaborate with stakeholders (Operations, Asset Management, Projects, Business Improvement, Financial & Commercial) to influence, prioritize and support improvements to the Hot Metals Area * Support environmental compliance and performance improvement of the Hot Metals Area * Interface with relevant central teams (Copper & Diamonds Technical and Productivity & Technical Support) to maximize their support for the business. About you To be successfully considered for this role, you will have: * A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering. Other engineering disciplines with applicable processing experience may also be considered. * 8+ years of related process engineering work experience * Knowledge of technical, operational and financial aspects of smelting and refining processes * Ability to understand, explain, and troubleshoot complex, inter-related unit operations, processing systems, projects, and production strategies * Skills in statistical and data analysis * Skilled in collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders from plant personnel to organization leaders * Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in MS Office and spreadsheet applications It will also be beneficial if you have: * 4+ years of demonstrated experience in supervisory role * Exposure to Lean and Six Sigma processes * Knowledge of copper processing principles * Knowledge of high temperature processes * Knowledge of processing equipment * Experience with process data historian systems (notably OSIsoft PI) * Experience with advanced control systems Where you will be working Rio Tinto Kennecott is a fully integrated mining operation located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, US.
